Plato on love
이 페이지는 도서관의 책 요약을 바탕으로 한 내용이에요. Plato의 글은 아니에요.
Plato understood love as a desire that could draw the soul toward beauty and truth. In Symposium, he presented love as a movement beyond a single beautiful thing toward Beauty itself. Its deepest value lay in widening understanding rather than possessing what seemed beautiful. In Phaedrus, he connected love with the care of the soul, suggesting that powerful feeling could help lead a person toward truth rather than merely distract from it.
Desire began with a lack
In Symposium, Socrates challenged Agathon’s praise by examining what love desired. Through Diotima’s teaching, Plato presented love as neither complete nor fully satisfied. Its restlessness came from seeking something it did not already possess, making desire a starting point for inquiry.
Love sought something lasting
Diotima’s account also gave love a creative purpose: it sought to bring something lasting into being in the presence of beauty. This added another dimension to desire, beyond noticing beauty or seeking understanding: love could aim at something that endured.
The soul needed careful guidance
In Phaedrus, Plato pictured the soul as a charioteer managing two different horses, one obedient and one unruly. This image gave his account of love a tension: strong feeling was not enough by itself, because the soul also needed direction.
