この本について

What if the furnace cannot prove what the world is made of?

In The Sceptical Chymist, Robert Boyle turns a dispute about matter into a conversation among friends in a garden. Themistius defends Aristotle’s earth, air, fire and water. Carneades, who represents Boyle’s views, asks whether the evidence supports those familiar claims. What seems settled becomes a question worth opening again.

The chymists offer another answer: salt, sulphur and mercury. But Carneades challenges their certainty too. Both schools claim that fire separates bodies into their true parts. Boyle tests that claim against the furnace and the flask, exploring what experiments can show—and what people are too ready to conclude.

  • The limits of fire Consider why heating a substance may not prove what it truly contains.
  • Old elements under scrutiny Follow Carneades as he questions both Aristotle’s elements and the chymists’ three principles.
  • Care before certainty Meet a thinker who questions old answers without claiming more than he can support.
  • Chemistry taking a new direction Explore a plea for judging chemistry through evidence rather than inherited explanations.

A courteous debate sets the rules of proof

Boyle presents the book as a work left rough on purpose. He speaks of himself in the third person, like a painter hiding behind his canvas to hear what people say. The voice invites argument rather than closing it.

What is The Sceptical Chymist about?

It is a dialogue in which Carneades doubts that bodies are made of four elements or of salt, sulphur and mercury. He argues that the experiments used to prove these claims, mostly by fire, do not prove them.

Who are Carneades, Eleutherius, Themistius and Philoponus?

Carneades is the sceptic who speaks for Boyle's doubts. Themistius defends Aristotle's four elements, Philoponus defends the chemists' three principles, and Eleutherius is a fair-minded friend who asks questions and later proposes a compromise.

What does chymist mean in the title?

Chymist is the old spelling for chemist, and it covers alchemists and practical experimenters alike. The title names a doubter who questions their theory of elements while still valuing their experiments and furnace skill.
