この本について
What if two penniless wanderers could make themselves kings—and mistake their own boldness for the right to rule?
On a sweltering night train in India, a newspaper journalist meets a stranger who asks a small favour. Soon Daniel Dravot and Peachey Carnehan arrive at his office with a far bigger scheme: travel to a remote mountain land beyond Afghanistan and claim kingdoms of their own.
In Rudyard Kipling’s The Man Who Would Be King, the pair turn boastful talk into careful plans, with disguises, guns and a pact to rule. Their destination is Kafiristan. Their greatest gamble is not simply reaching it, but staking their ambitions on people and beliefs they scarcely understand.

A favor on a train sets everything moving
A journalist with no money rides Intermediate class on the night train from Ajmir to Mhow. He describes it with dry humor. There are no cushions, and in hot weather, he says, Intermediates are carried out of the carriages dead.
At Nasirabad a huge man in shirtsleeves climbs in. He is a vagabond like the narrator. He poses as a newspaper correspondent and visits small Native States. There he frightens the rulers with the threat of exposure and takes hush money.

What is The Man Who Would Be King about?
It tells of two English drifters, Peachey Carnehan and Daniel Dravot, who leave British India to make themselves kings of Kafiristan, a remote mountain land. A journalist hears the tale from one of them years later.
Who are Carnehan and Dravot?
They are two big, resourceful loafers who have been soldiers, printers and engine drivers. Dravot has the red beard and the bold dreams, and Carnehan is his loyal friend and drill master. They sign a contract to share the kingdom.
What is Kafiristan in the story?
Kafiristan is a mountain country in the corner of Afghanistan, home to tribes with stone idols, fair-haired people and their own customs. Kipling uses it as a place where the two men believe a strong fighter can rule.
