この本について
Who gets a seat at the table when old families meet new money?
In Society as I Have Found It, Ward McAllister takes you into the dinners, balls and summer houses of Gilded Age society. A Savannah lawyer who turns to fashionable life, he explains how New York’s elite defines itself—and how he helps set its rules.
Old families such as the Livingstons and Van Rensselaers face a flood of fortunes from railroads, banking and industry. McAllister, closely linked to the Four Hundred, offers his own view of who belongs. From winter balls to Newport summers, menus, manners and invitations become tools for shaping a social circle.

A Southern boyhood shapes a man of manners
The memoir opens with family, recalling his mother's charity, his father's character and his brothers' careers. His mother is a New York beauty who enters society at eighteen. He calls her the loveliest woman he has seen and a tireless friend to the poor.
A young Georgian wins her and takes her to Savannah. His father has just lost much of his property in a great fire, and the son must sign the notes that pay for rebuilding. That debt follows him for a third of his life. When his mother dies, her will asks him to free the people she held in slavery, and he does so. He tells this with pride, and it sits inside a world built on slavery.

Who was Ward McAllister?
He was an American lawyer and society figure of the Gilded Age, born in Savannah, Georgia. He helped organize the Patriarchs balls in New York in 1872 and was widely seen as a guide to fashionable manners until his death in 1895.
What were the Patriarchs in the book?
The Patriarchs were a group of twenty five respected New York men that McAllister formed in 1872 to give winter balls. Each participant could invite a fixed number of guests and was responsible for their behavior, keeping the balls exclusive.
