Have you ever wondered why the most overlooked lives often hold the deepest truths? In Lummox, Fannie Hurst brings to life an emotionally powerful and socially conscious portrait of a woman who endures life’s trials with quiet strength. Bertha, a large and physically imposing maid often referred to cruelly as a "lummox," has spent her life in domestic service—devoted, dutiful, and largely invisible to those she serves.

But beneath her unassuming exterior lies a heart that aches, hopes, and remembers. Told with tender empathy and sharp social observation, Lummox is a tribute to the unsung laborers of the world—those whose work is thankless, whose lives are judged from afar, and whose dreams are often denied. As Bertha navigates personal heartbreak, generational change, and the crushing weight of being unseen, she emerges as a quietly heroic figure in her own right.
