この本について
What happens when a prophet sees the suffering of the dead—and dares to ask for mercy?
Vision of Esdras is a short Christian apocalypse, traditionally attributed to the biblical Ezra. According to the text, Esdras begins in prayer, troubled by the fate of human beings. He asks God to reveal what happens to sinners after death, and divine messengers lead him into the unseen world.
The vision shows souls facing punishments that answer particular sins, alongside the rewards of the righteous. Yet its concern is not terror alone. Moved by the suffering before him, Esdras pleads for the condemned. His journey brings questions of justice and compassion into a vivid account of the afterlife.

A prophet fasts and asks to see mysteries
The vision opens in a quiet house. Esdras, a prophet, cries out to the Most High and asks to be shown the divine mysteries. He gives a date, the thirtieth year and the twenty-second day of the month, the way a witness might in a court. The text wants you to feel that this is a report and not a dream.
That night the archangel Michael appears and orders him to abstain from bread for seventy weeks. He obeys. Then Raphael hands him a rod of storax, and Esdras fasts for twice sixty weeks more. The numbers are huge, and they are meant to be. They tell you that this knowledge is not cheap.

What is the Vision of Esdras about?
It tells how the prophet Esdras fasts, is taken to heaven, and pleads with God for sinners. He then tours Tartarus and paradise, sees the punishments and the saints, and finally gives up his soul after his prayer is granted.
Who was Esdras and is this the Bible's Ezra?
Esdras is the Greek form of Ezra, the scribe and priest known from the Bible. The text is attributed to him as a convention of ancient writing, to lend authority, and is not thought to come from his own time.
When was the Vision of Esdras written?
Scholars do not agree. Proposed dates range between the first few centuries CE and the Middle Ages. It survives in Greek and Latin versions and probably grew in layers as scribes copied and added to it.
