この本について
What does a captain owe the men who haul wet rope and stand watch in freezing rain?
Richard Henry Dana leaves his studies at Harvard and sails from Boston as a common sailor. In Two Years Before the Mast, he takes you aboard the Pilgrim, around Cape Horn, and toward Mexican California. High seas, biting cold, and hard work replace the life he knows. This is true adventure told from the working sailor’s side of the deck.
On the California coast, Dana collects and prepares cattle hides, work as punishing as the passage itself. He shares the crew’s dark, crowded sleeping quarters and sees how much power a captain holds. His steady account follows daily labor rather than a tidy plot, bringing ordinary sailors into focus as thinking, feeling people whose dignity matters.

A scholar with weak eyes goes to sea
Dana leaves Cambridge for a hard reason. His eyes are weak, and he decides that a complete change of life, far from books, may cure them. So on August 14 he boards the brig Pilgrim, bound from Boston round Cape Horn to the western coast of North America.
He puts on loose duck trousers, a checked shirt and a tarpaulin hat, and thinks he looks like a real sailor. Every man aboard knows at once that he is a landsman. His hands are too soft, his walk is wrong, and his neckerchief is badly knotted. Dana tells the joke on himself with good humor.
