この本について

What if knowing how to deceive makes someone better, not worse?

In Plato’s Lesser Hippias, a public talk on Homer leads to a troubling exchange. Hippias of Elis praises Achilles as honest and calls Odysseus crafty. Socrates asks a small question about deception, and a familiar distinction begins to slip.

Can the person who knows the truth also be the most capable liar? Socrates tests the link between knowledge, skill, and deliberate wrongdoing. Each step seems harmless, yet together they threaten the belief that doing wrong on purpose is worse than making a mistake. What begins as a discussion of Homer becomes a puzzle about goodness itself.

A famous speaker is asked one plain question

The dialogue opens just after Hippias has finished a public lecture on Homer. Eudicus notices that Socrates has said nothing and asks why he does not join in the praise or refute the speaker. Only those who care for philosophy remain in the room, and Eudicus says that gives Socrates all the more reason to speak.

What is Lesser Hippias about?

It is a conversation in which Socrates asks Hippias whether Achilles or Odysseus is the better man. The talk grows into a question about whether the truthful and the deceitful differ, and whether doing wrong on purpose is better than doing it by accident.

Who are Hippias, Eudicus, and Socrates in the dialogue?

Hippias is a travelling teacher from Elis who boasts of many skills. Eudicus is a listener who urges Socrates to speak. Socrates is the questioner, who tests Hippias with short questions and describes himself as eager to learn.

Why do Achilles and Odysseus matter in this dialogue?

Hippias calls Achilles honest and Odysseus cunning, based on lines from Homer. Socrates uses them as test cases to ask whether the honest man and the deceiver are truly opposites, and to look at what Achilles actually says in the Iliad.
