この本について
A fire at the center of a kåta offers shelter in a land where reindeer and seasons shape daily life.
In People of the Kåtas, Swedish journalist Ester Blenda Nordström travels into Lapland to meet the Sámi, the Indigenous people of northern Scandinavia. Her curiosity leads her into daily life: work, travel, family, and weather. She brings a reporter’s wish to see for herself to this account of a harsh and beautiful country.
Reindeer herds move between grazing lands as the seasons change, and the people move with them. At the heart of Nordström’s account stands the kåta, a home of poles covered with turf or cloth, with a central hearth. Published in 1916, this travel account offers warmth and close observation.

A storm migration shows who sets the pace
The book opens in a spring snowstorm. The narrator, a young teacher sent to run a summer school for Sámi children, walks beside a long train of reindeer sleds. Nobody can speak over the wind, and nobody can stop for long.
The reindeer set the pace, not the people. When an animal collapses, the sled behind drags it along until someone kicks it back onto its feet. The narrator is shocked at first, yet soon does the same. She falls in the snow herself and feels a warm, sweet sleep come over her. A tug on her arm wakes her, and she runs in terror after the caravan, which has vanished into the white.

What is People of the Kåtas about?
It is a first-person account of a summer and a migration spent with a Sámi reindeer-herding community in Swedish Lapland. The narrator teaches the children in a tent school and shares the families' work, meals, beliefs and worries.
What is a kåta?
A kåta is the Sámi tent, made of a frame of poles covered with canvas or turf. It has a central fire, a kitchen corner called the boasson, and a floor of birch brushwood, and it can be raised or taken down quickly.
Is People of the Kåtas a true story?
Yes, it is nonfiction. Ester Blenda Nordström wrote it from her own time as a teacher among the Sámi in northern Sweden, in the years of the First World War, and she names real people and places in the mountains.
