ゴドディン――カトラエスの戦いの詩 in short

Y Gododin is a collection of about ninety-seven stanzas that remember one disaster. A lord named Mynyddog feeds his chosen retinue of three hundred and sixty-three men for a year in his hall at Eidyn. Then they ride to Cattraeth against Deira and Bernicia, and only a few come back.

What ゴドディン――カトラエスの戦いの詩 is about

What would you give for a year of feasting, if the bill came due in blood? In Y Gododin, a war band of three hundred and sixty-three men drinks mead and wine in a lord's hall at Eidyn, the place scholars link with Edinburgh. Then the men ride out to Cattraeth to fight the English kingdoms of Deira and Bernicia. Almost none come home.

The poem is credited to Aneirin, a bard of the old North of Britain, traditionally dated to the late sixth century. It is a chain of about ninety-seven short stanzas, mostly songs of praise or grief. You will meet Mynyddog, Kayawc and Cynon, and see why a bard's praise counted as payment.

対象読者. This is for readers who love early poetry, Welsh and Celtic history, war elegies and the age of Arthur. It suits anyone curious how a warrior society used song to honour loss.

The 8 key ideas

A bard and a lord bound by gifts

The poem belongs to the old North of Britain, where Britons and English fought over the land between the Forth and the Humber. Its voice is Aneirin, a bard who sings as a man who was there. He ate at the lord's table, he knew the dead by name, and he feels he owes them his song.

At the centre stands Mynyddog, lord of Eidyn. His hall is rich in mead, wine, horses and gold, and the poem calls him courteous and generous. Many stanzas return to that hall, linking a warrior's deeds in the field with the gifts of the feast.

The bard is a keeper of memory, paid with food, drink and gifts. He must repay the debt with praise that outlasts any grave mound. Honour runs both ways. The lord gives freely, and the warriors give their lives.

The first stanza shows the whole bargain. It praises a young warrior with fine horses, a bright shield and gold on his clothes, then turns at once to his body lying under the ravens. The poet says there is no hatred in him, only the wish to serve the dead man in song.

The bard and the lord are partners, and praise is the last gift a fallen man receives.

『ゴドディン――カトラエスの戦いの詩』についての質問

What is Y Gododin about?

It is an early Welsh poem that mourns a war band sent by the lord Mynyddog to Cattraeth after a year of feasting. Most stanzas praise or lament warriors, and the poet repeatedly counts the few who return.

Who wrote Y Gododin and when?

The poem is credited to Aneirin, a bard of the old North of Britain, and is traditionally dated to the late sixth century. It speaks in the voice of a survivor who was present at the battle.

Where and what is Cattraeth?

Cattraeth is the place where the battle in the poem is fought. The poem names it often but does not describe it fully. The men ride there from Eidyn, a place scholars link with Edinburgh, to face the English kingdoms.

Is Y Gododin easy to follow for a new reader?

Yes, in small steps. It is made of short stanzas, each with one warrior, one gift or one image. Repeated openings, vivid animals and clear numbers help you find your footing, and you can begin with any stanza.

What is the main message of Y Gododin?

It shows that honour, generosity and courage are bought at a deadly price. The feast and the field are joined, and the bard's duty is to remember the fallen by name so that their praise outlasts their graves.
