Wuthering Heights in short
Wuthering Heights tells of two families bound together by one foundling. Heathcliff is raised beside Catherine Earnshaw, loses her to a rich neighbor, and returns to repay everyone who humbled him. Through Nelly Dean, the quarrel passes to the next generation.
What Wuthering Heights is about
What would you do if a blizzard forced you to spend the night in the house of a man who lets his dogs attack guests? Mr. Lockwood, a gentleman renting a country home in Yorkshire in 1801, finds out. At Wuthering Heights he is given a bed never meant for visitors, and through its window comes a child's ice-cold hand and a voice begging to be let in.
Wuthering Heights is the only novel by Emily Brontë, who died in 1848, a year after it appeared under the pen name Ellis Bell. It follows two families across two generations, mostly as the housekeeper Nelly Dean tells it. Expect passion, pride and revenge.
対象読者. Readers who love stormy moorland settings, fierce and flawed lovers, family feuds across generations, and tales told by a gossiping housekeeper will feel at home here.

A snowbound visitor finds a house at war
Mr. Lockwood arrives in 1801 to rent Thrushcross Grange on the Yorkshire moors. He rides over to meet his landlord, Mr. Heathcliff, who lives at Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff looks like a gypsy but speaks like a gentleman. Lockwood loves solitude and decides the two of them are alike.
The welcome is rough. A pack of dogs attacks him, while Heathcliff and old Joseph climb the cellar steps with perfect calm. On a second visit a snowstorm traps him in the house, where nobody offers a kind word. He is finally shown to a bed in a room kept from guests. On the window ledge one name is scratched again and again: Catherine Earnshaw, Catherine Heathcliff, Catherine Linton.
He dreams of a ghostly child at the window, begging to be let in. His scream brings Heathcliff, who weeps and tears the window open, calling for Cathy. Lockwood asks the housekeeper Nelly Dean to tell him what she knows. The book begins with a haunting and spends its length explaining it.

Hareton grieves for him. Cathy and Hareton, who have grown close as teacher and pupil, plan to marry on New Year's Day and move to the Grange. Joseph stays on to keep the Heights.
