Who Catherine Earnshaw is

Catherine Earnshaw grows up at Wuthering Heights, where her father brings home a foundling boy named Heathcliff. She becomes his closest friend, sharing games, stories and escapes onto the moors. Quick to laugh and quick to rage, she resists the household's efforts to keep her in order.

What Catherine Earnshaw wants

Catherine wants the freedom she knows with Heathcliff, but she also enjoys comfort, courtesy and admiration. A stay at Thrushcross Grange introduces her to the refined life of the Linton family. She returns with fine manners, and the difference between her position and Heathcliff's becomes painfully visible.

Catherine Earnshaw and the others in the story

Catherine loves Edgar Linton for his pleasant nature, handsome appearance and wealth, and she accepts his offer of marriage. Yet she sees her connection with Heathcliff as something deeper than her affection for Edgar. She imagines that marrying Edgar will let her help Heathcliff, while Nelly Dean challenges that belief.
