ウッドクラフトとキャンピング in short
Woodcraft and Camping argues that rest is worth planning for, and that planning means carrying less. Sears builds the case in steps. Pack light, stay calm, protect your skin and make a shelter open to a bright fire.
What ウッドクラフトとキャンピング is about
What does a tired city worker really need from a week in the woods? According to George Washington Sears, who wrote under the name Nessmuk, the answer is far less than you think. He once crossed the Northern Wilderness of New York with a canoe, a blanket bag, a rod, a hatchet and food, and the whole load never passed twenty-six pounds.
Woodcraft and Camping is his pocket guide for people who work for a living and want one good season in the forest each year. He wrote it after more than fifty years of camping, fishing and hunting. You get his tested answers on clothing, shelter, fire, cooking and canoes, with sharp opinions and jokes along the way.
対象読者. You will enjoy this book if you love camp life, canoes and trout streams, or want practical advice from a cheerful, seasoned woodsman.

Rest in the woods is a real need
Sears opens with a worry that still sounds familiar. Americans, he says, work without pause, and the strain snaps something inside many of them. He agrees with the thinker Herbert Spencer that overwork ruins people.
His second point is about money. Hurried people will pay a great deal for rest, and most get cheated. The summer visitor gets about ten cents of value for each dollar spent. A rich man can hire guides and boats and never notice the cost. Sears writes for the mechanics, clerks, artists and merchants who need rest badly and can afford very little.
The remedy comes from more than fifty years of practice, and it is a plain one. Go to the forest, and carry less. Men gathered around a winter stove always agree that they took too much gear. The pull of one more handy item is strong, and the result is a load fit for a pack mule. For Sears the woods are medicine, and a trip that wears you out defeats its own purpose.
Plan every outing around rest, because rest is what you are buying.

『ウッドクラフトとキャンピング』についての質問
What is Woodcraft and Camping about?
It is a pocket manual of outdoor skills by George Washington Sears. He explains how to pack light, build shelters and campfires, fish, cook and handle a small canoe, with stories from fifty years in the woods.
Who was Nessmuk?
Nessmuk was the pen name of George Washington Sears, a Pennsylvania woodsman and writer. He wrote about camping and canoeing for Forest and Stream, and a very light cedar canoe built for him became known by his name.
What is the main message of Woodcraft and Camping?
Go to the woods to rest, not to suffer. Carry little, stay calm, build a good fire and a dry camp, and cook simply. Skill and preparation turn a short vacation into real renewal.
What is a shanty-tent?
It is a cloth shelter Sears praises as one of his best designs. A waterproofed cotton roof is stretched over a small frame of four posts and rods, open to a front fire, and it weighs about three pounds.
Is Woodcraft and Camping easy to read?
Yes. The language is plain and chatty, the chapters are short, and the advice comes wrapped in stories about campers, guides and fishermen. Recipes, measurements and sketches of camps are explained step by step.
