魔女物語 in short

Linton's book is a march through two nations and centuries of fear. In Scotland she shows a creed that made curses, cures and quarrels into crimes, a king who gave the panic official shape, and courts that trusted torture. In England she follows political plots, possessed children, Matthew Hopkins and the credulity of judges.

What 魔女物語 is about

Picture a woman in a Scottish court in 1662 who says she flew on a straw and shot elf arrows from her thumbnail. Nobody forces her to speak. She simply talks, and the clerks write it all down. Her name is Isobell Gowdie, and hers is one of hundreds of stories in this book.

Witch Stories was written by E. Lynn Linton and published in London in 1861. She worked from trial records, old pamphlets and chronicles found in the British Museum. She does not sort every case into fraud, illness or self-deception. She says all may be present, and she lets you judge. You get a tour of courtrooms, cottages and pulpits where ordinary quarrels turned deadly.

対象読者. Readers who love true crime, courtroom drama and social history will find a great deal here. It also suits anyone curious about folklore, old trial records, and how fear spreads through a village.

The 10 key ideas

    Scotland's gloomy creed fed witch-hunting

Linton opens with Scotland because she thinks superstition lingered there longest. Its hills held kelpies that drowned travelers, brownies and the banshee that warned of death. Even fairyland was a place of dread, where the devil ruled.

On top of this sat firm beliefs. The evil eye could kill a cow with a glance. A curse could bring sickness. A poor old woman with a sharp tongue could be blamed for a dead calf or a neighbor's fit.

Healing was as dangerous as harming. A woman who used herb drinks or a holed stone might cure a patient and still be hanged for it. Often the patient she had cured gave the strongest evidence against her. Doubters were called atheists, so few dared question the witnesses.

A belief that cannot be tested will always find a victim.

『魔女物語』についての質問

What is Witch Stories by E. Lynn Linton about?

It collects real trials, possessions and persecutions from Scotland and England, from early legends to the eighteenth century. Linton retells the cases from old records and pamphlets and adds her own comments on fraud, illness and credulity.

Are the stories in Witch Stories true?

They come from real court records, pamphlets and chronicles, such as Pitcairn's Scottish trials and Thomas Potts on Pendle. Linton tells them in her own style and judges their evidence, distinguishing legal records from legends and dubious reports.

Who were the Pendle witches in this book?

They were a group in Lancashire tried in 1612, led by two feuding old women, Mother Demdike and Chattox. Linton relates their confessions, the part played by a nine-year-old girl named Jennet Device, and the hangings.

Who was Matthew Hopkins?

Hopkins was a self-styled witch-finder general in the 1640s. Linton describes his methods of walking, binding and swimming suspects, his fee from towns, and the mass hangings at places like Bury St. Edmunds.

What is the main message of Witch Stories?

Linton argues that blind belief and unexamined evidence can lead whole societies to cruelty. She asks readers to weigh fraud, illness and exaggeration and to value common sense and fair trial.
