夢がかなうとき in short
When Dreams Come True follows a rich, restless man who leaves a career in diplomacy to look for a life closer to the earth. In Chihuahua he meets Chiquita, a dancer raised by a priest, and is followed south by his family and by Blanch. Around them gather a jealous rancher, a gambling vaquero and a generous mining friend.
What 夢がかなうとき is about
What would make a man with twenty million dollars and a bright diplomatic career ride into the Mexican desert and refuse to turn back? In When Dreams Come True, the answer begins with a glimpse. At dusk on a mesa trail, Captain Jack Forest meets a woman galloping a black horse. She smiles, nods, and vanishes into the dark.
Ritter Brown wrote this romance of the Southwest in an age of machines and quick money, and the book argues against both. Around Forest gather Chiquita, a dancer raised by a priest, Blanch Lennox, a society beauty who follows him south, and Don Felipe Ramirez, a rancher with an old shame to settle. You get a fiesta, a near lynching, and a duel of wills between two women.
対象読者. You will enjoy this book if you love sweeping romances, desert scenery, rival heroines, horses and duels, or stories where a hero walks away from wealth to search for a freer life.

A restless captain returns to the desert
The book opens in August on a broken mesa in Chihuahua. Captain Jack Forest and his servant José rest beside a spring, close to a skull bleached white by the sun. Forest rides Starlight, a chestnut Arabian that once stood guard over him against wolves and vultures when fever left him helpless in this very spot.
Chapter two supplies his past. He studied at Harvard, served as a diplomat in London and St. Petersburg, and fought in Cuba and the Philippines. He was about to become minister to Greece and marry Blanch Lennox. Then, on a twilight trail, he met the woman on the black horse.
That meeting broke his plans. He felt that the world he had revered was cut off from the living earth. Now he sits by the spring, rich and lonely, wondering why the voices of nature have gone quiet for him.
A person can leave wealth and rank behind and still feel unfinished until he follows what he truly longs for.

Felipe attacks the captain and is shot dead by Chiquita, and Blanch dies by a stray bullet. Dick and Bessie find proof of Chiquita's innocence in a dying man's letter, then become engaged. Chiquita and Forest marry and flee to her Tewana people, who accept them as guides.
