陸と海のあいだ in short
The three tales share one shape. A person waits in a narrow place, a stranger or a rival arrives, and a choice must be made before the situation closes. A young captain is drawn into a lonely house, a new captain hides a man who is almost his double, and a loving girl tries to manage three men and a secret.
What 陸と海のあいだ is about
Picture a young captain who comes out of his cabin after sixty-one days at sea and finds a stranger waiting to breakfast with him. The man has brought eggs, sausages and real potatoes, and he asks politely for coffee.
This is the opening of A Smile of Fortune, the first of three tales in Joseph Conrad's 'Twixt Land and Sea, published in 1912. Conrad draws on his years as a merchant seaman in Eastern waters. Each tale puts a person in a narrow place between land and sea, and between duty and desire. The second hides a fugitive swimmer in a captain's cabin. The third follows a white brig, a girl at a piano and a jealous Dutch officer. Each is left before its ending.

A stranger arrives before the captain's breakfast
The first tale opens as a young captain brings his barque to a sugar island he calls the Pearl of the Ocean. He has come for a cargo and hopes the freight rates are high. At morning the steward announces that a gentleman is waiting.
The gentleman is Alfred Jacobus, a large, pale, sleepy-eyed man who deals in ship's stores. He has risen before six, waited on the quay and loaded the captain's table with shore food. He gives the captain the names of every ship in port and shares harbor gossip, in a low voice, with a face that shows nothing.
The captain is annoyed, yet he listens. He has been outmaneuvered and cannot say how. His mate Mr. Burns sees a trick, while the captain sees a decent fellow earning a living. Both are partly right.
A stranger who helps you first will often ask for something later.

Characters, plot and themes

- Alice Jacobus's daughter, secluded in a garden and dressed in a flimsy wrapper, who speaks in a harsh, contemptuous voice.
- Leggatt A young chief mate who has killed a man in a storm and swims to a strange ship rather than face trial.
- The young captain A new captain, a stranger to his ship, who hides Leggatt in his cabin and feels that they are one.
- Freya Nelson A fair, capable young woman on a Dutch-ruled island who plans to marry Jasper Allen and live aboard his brig.
- Jasper Allen The reckless, devoted captain of the white brig Bonito, who counts the days until Freya's twenty-first birthday.
- Heemskirk A thick-set Dutch naval lieutenant who commands a small gunboat and wants Freya for himself.
- Old Nelson Freya's timid father, a Dane living on a small island, who fears Dutch authorities and fails to understand his daughter.
How it ends (spoiler)
In the first tale, the captain finds he cannot leave the island without a cost. He resigns his command, so that the only thing left him is the memory of the garden. In the second, the captain finds the floppy hat floating beside the ship, which guides him as he turns away from the shore. Leggatt swims away, free. In the third, Heemskirk wrecks the Bonito on a reef and Jasper is broken. Freya, ill, dies in Hong Kong of pneumonia, and Nelson comes to her friend with the news.

『陸と海のあいだ』についての質問
What is 'Twixt Land and Sea about?
It gathers three sea tales by Joseph Conrad. A Smile of Fortune follows a captain and a ship chandler in a sugar port. The Secret Sharer hides a fugitive in a cabin. Freya of the Seven Isles tells of a brig, a girl and a jealous naval officer.
What does the title of The Secret Sharer mean?
The secret sharer is Leggatt, the fugitive whom the young captain hides in his cabin. He shares the captain's clothes, room and secret, and he seems to be the captain's double. The word sharer points to this closeness between two men.
Who is Jacobus in A Smile of Fortune?
Alfred Jacobus is a ship chandler, a seller of supplies to ships, who boards the captain's vessel at breakfast. He is calm, polite and persistent, and he is shunned by respectable townspeople. His brother Ernest is a wealthy merchant with whom he has not spoken for years.
Is 'Twixt Land and Sea based on a true story?
The tales are fiction, published in 1912, but they draw on Conrad's years at sea in Eastern waters. The ports, trading customs and ship life come from his experience. Conrad also said that The Secret Sharer grew out of a real event at sea.
Is 'Twixt Land and Sea worth reading?
Readers find three very different tales in one book: a witty harbor story, a tense cabin drama and a tragic love story. Each has memorable characters, vivid sea scenes and an ending that stays in the mind.
