トリルビー in short

Trilby is the story of three young painters in 1850s Paris and the tall, kind, tone-deaf model who joins them. It starts as a comedy of studios, songs and food, with friendship as a home. Then love, shame and class pressure arrive, a mother steps in, and the happy circle breaks apart.

What トリルビー is about

Picture a studio in the Latin Quarter of Paris on a sunny, showery April day. Three young friends enjoy their new home. Then a loud knock sounds and a voice calls out the English milkman's cry. A tall young woman walks in wearing a French soldier's gray overcoat and huge felt slippers. She sits cross-legged on the model throne, eats bread and cream cheese, and announces that she owns the handsomest feet in all Paris. Then she offers to sing.

This is Trilby, the novel by George Du Maurier, an artist and famous draughtsman for Punch who studied painting in Paris as a young man. He looks back on his student days with a smile and a sigh, and he gives you laughter, songs, a gentle heroine and a sinister musician named Svengali.

対象読者. For readers who love the Paris of artists, warm friendships, fond narrators, and love stories shadowed by a sinister musician. It suits anyone who enjoys music, painting and old songs.

The story in 7 parts

Three friends and a model share Paris

The story opens in a big studio on the Place St. Anatole des Arts. It is a young man's paradise, with a piano from London, fencing foils, a trapeze, plaster casts and a vast divan under the north window. Three English friends share it, and their happiness comes first, because everything later is measured against it.

Taffy is a huge Yorkshireman who served in the Crimean War and missed the charge at Balaklava through a sprained ankle. The Laird is a cheerful Scot who paints bullfighters he has never seen. Little Billee is the youngest, small, graceful and gifted, raised at home by his mother and sister. His friends see his true genius and guard his innocence.

Then Trilby O'Ferrall arrives, calling out the milkman's cry. Her face is freckled and her mouth is wide, yet her smile is so friendly that the room warms at once. She is an artist's model, proud of her perfect feet. She offers to sing Ben Bolt, her only song. She follows the shape of the tune but never lands on a true note, and nobody knows whether it is a joke.

Little Billee sees something else in her. With an old compass he scratches her foot on the red wall, and a sculptor later calls it a little masterpiece. Billee wishes she did not pose for the figure, and he begins to idealize her from the feet up.

Joy in this book begins with a glance and a foot on a wall.
