トーノ・バンゲイ in short

Tono-Bungay follows George Ponderevo from the housekeeper's room of a Kentish mansion to the boardrooms of Edwardian London. A proud boy is thrown out of his small world, helps his uncle build a tonic fortune and marries. The money grows into a mountain of shares and builds a palace that stands half finished.

What トーノ・バンゲイ is about

What happens when a boy of fourteen fights a gentleman's son and refuses to say sorry? In Tono-Bungay, he loses his home, his mother's favour and his place in the only world he understands. That boy is George Ponderevo, and his story is a tale of class, money and love.

H. G. Wells published this novel in 1909. George tells it himself, years later, from a yard beside the Thames where he builds engines and fast ships. At its centre stands his uncle Edward, a small, fidgety chemist who bottles a worthless tonic and sells it so loudly that it turns into a fortune. You get a country house, a bottling room, a glider and a steamy African beach.

対象読者. You will love this book if you enjoy satire with a human heart, stories of self-made fortunes and their collapse, and an engineer's blunt voice telling his tangled life honestly.

The story in 10 parts

A great house teaches everyone their place

George grows up believing that Bladesover House is the whole world in small. His mother is the housekeeper there, and she knows the rank of everyone in the land. The village, the church and the farms all bow to the house.

Below stairs, he learns the order of things by ear. Servants chat about titles and family trees, and copies of the peerage lie about the pantry. Even the vicar, the doctor and the blacksmith have a fixed place on the list. Tea in the housekeeper's room is the worst hour of his day.

A forgotten storeroom of books gives him a different education. He reads Tom Paine, Swift and Gibbon, and doubt takes root. Years later, George decides that Bladesover is the key to England. The country was Bladesover two hundred years ago, and new money lies on top like a coat of paint. The Bladesover system is the lens through which George reads the whole country.

『トーノ・バンゲイ』についての質問

What is Tono-Bungay about?

It tells how George Ponderevo helps his uncle sell a worthless tonic and turn it into a fortune of shares and grand houses. It also follows George's love affairs, his flying experiments and his view of English society.

What does the name Tono-Bungay mean?

It is an invented word made up by the uncle for a patent medicine that is mostly flavour and a mild stimulant. Its meaningless, rich sound is the point, since the product sells on advertising and hope.

What is the Bladesover system in Tono-Bungay?

It is George's name for the old English order of great houses, with tenants, servants and villages in fixed ranks. He claims England still follows this pattern, and new money and new classes only grow around it.

Is Tono-Bungay based on a true story?

It is a novel, written by H. G. Wells and published in 1909. The company, the people and the voyages are invented, but the book draws on real features of the time, such as patent medicines, share flotations and country house life.

Is Tono-Bungay worth reading today?

Yes, for readers who like satire. Its comic uncle, its sharp picture of advertising and speculation, and its candid narrator make it lively reading, and its questions about trust and spending still sound familiar.
