トーニオ・クレーガー in short
Tonio Kröger is the story of a boy who feels too much for the world he is born into. He loves the handsome Hans Hansen and later the fair Ingeborg Holm, and both love and shame teach him to watch from outside. He becomes a writer, admired but lonely, and in Munich he lays out his doubts to Lisaweta Ivanovna, who answers with one sharp phrase.
What トーニオ・クレーガー is about
What does a person lose when he turns his feelings into words? Tonio Kröger, a boy from a northern merchant town, asks this question again and again. He asks it first through aching love for a classmate, and later as a writer who is admired by strangers and yet lonely.
Thomas Mann wrote this novella in nine short chapters, when he was a young author himself. It follows one man from a schoolboy with a notebook of poems to a famous writer, and then sends him north to the town of his childhood. You get two ways of living side by side, and a man who cannot settle in either.

A boy waits for a friend who forgets
The story opens at noon on a wet winter day in a narrow northern town. Tonio Kröger, fourteen years old, waits outside the school gate for his friend Hans Hansen. They had planned a walk together. When Hans comes out chatting with other boys, he seems to have forgotten, and Tonio's eyes cloud over.
Then Hans slips his arm through Tonio's and says he had not forgotten at all. Tonio softens at once. The two friends are opposites. Hans is fair, strong and a favorite of every teacher. Tonio is dark, dreamy and careless in class, and he keeps a notebook of poems.
Tonio loves Hans because Hans is everything he is not. On the walk along the old ramparts he tries to share Schiller's play Don Carlos, but Hans would rather talk about his horse books. When another boy joins them, Hans even mocks Tonio's unusual first name.
Yet at the gate of the Hansen villa, Hans promises to read the play, and Tonio walks home lightly. He does not want Hans to change. He has already learned that the one who loves more is the one who suffers.
Loving someone who cannot follow your inner world teaches you who you are.

How it ends (spoiler)
At the Danish seaside hotel, Tonio watches a country ball from the dark doorway. There he sees Hans and Ingeborg, or people just like them, and feels homesick and happy as before. He helps a pale girl who falls, then climbs to his room and weeps with remorse. Later he writes to Lisaweta. He says he stands between two worlds, and that his love for the ordinary, the blond and the blue-eyed, is what makes him a poet. He promises to do better.
