黄色いクレヨン in short

The Yellow Crayon follows one husband's search. Mr. Sabin, once a famous schemer, gives up his title to find Lucille, who has been taken to Europe by a secret society of aristocrats.

What 黄色いクレヨン is about

What do you do when the person you love is taken from you without a word? In The Yellow Crayon, an old duke sits motionless for a day and a night in his country house. Then he strikes a silver gong, orders a glass of Burgundy, and tells his servant to pack.

He drops his title, takes the plain name of Mr. Sabin, and sets out to find his wife Lucille, who has vanished in New York. Warnings written in a strange yellow pencil tell him to turn back. He does not. E. Phillips Oppenheim wrote this fast thriller of secret societies and high society, and it moves from New York bars to London drawing rooms. You meet a corrupt boss, a fearless lady adventurer, a smiling prince and a rising statesman, and you learn what the crayon stands for.

対象読者. You will enjoy this book if you like clever heroes, secret societies, glittering drawing rooms and quick duels of wit. It suits readers who love a husband's devoted quest and polished villains who smile while they plot.

The story in 7 parts

A duke gives up his title to search

The story begins in stillness. In a dim room in late summer, a man sits in a high-backed chair, arms folded, eyes fixed on nothing. Bees hum outside among the flowers. Yet he has not moved for a day and a night.

Then he strikes a silver gong and calls for his servant Duson. He orders Burgundy and drinks it with care. He orders his things packed, the staff paid off, and rooms taken in New York. His wife, he says, will not be coming back, but her belongings must stay exactly as she left them.

He drops a name too. The Duc de Souspennier stays behind, and Mr. Sabin takes the train. He is an old diplomat who knows that a man who hides his rank can ask more questions. On the train he explains to Duson that Madame is in the hands of people who hold some power over her. He warns of danger and offers Duson a way out. Duson refuses and swears to stay.

Grief has not broken this man. It has turned him into a hunter, calm and watchful, who limps on a cane yet misses nothing. When you love someone, the first step is simply to decide to act.
