院長 in short
The Warden tells of a good and gentle man whose easy life rests on an old will. A bright young reformer asks if the money is rightly used, and a great newspaper, a proud archdeacon and hopeful old men are drawn in. Through it all Mr Harding tries to find out whether he is honest, and not merely whether he is safe.
What 院長 is about
What would you do if a newspaper called you a thief, and you could not be sure it was wrong? That is the question facing Septimus Harding, a gentle clergyman in the cathedral town of Barchester. He has a comfortable house, a fine voice, a cello, and a daughter he adores. He also draws eight hundred pounds a year from an old charity for twelve poor men.
The Warden is the first of Anthony Trollope's Barchester novels, published in 1855. It is a gently comic story of church money, full of vivid people and a hero who fears every quarrel, yet whose conscience will not leave him alone.
対象読者. You will enjoy this book if you like gentle comedy, warm characters, church and village politics, and quiet moral questions. It suits readers who love stories where one decent person stands against the crowd.

A Comfortable Post Built on an Old Will
The story opens in Barchester, a quiet cathedral town in the west of England. Septimus Harding is precentor of the cathedral, the man in charge of its music. He is a small, mild man in black who plays the cello every day for anyone who will listen.
His good fortune rests on a will made in 1434. John Hiram, a wool merchant, left a house and some meadows to support twelve old wool-carders, with a warden to look after them. Over the centuries the meadows are covered with houses and their rents climb. The twelve old men receive a modest daily allowance, while the warden receives eight hundred pounds a year and a pretty house.
Mr Harding is no schemer. When he took office, he added twopence a day to each man's pay from his own pocket. The old men live well, and he is happy. A decent man living inside an old arrangement may not look at it until someone makes him.
Comfort can hide a question that honesty cannot forget.

Characters, plot and themes
Main characters
- Septimus Harding The mild, musical warden of Hiram's Hospital, who loves his cello and his daughter and wants only to be sure he is honest.
- Eleanor Harding His younger daughter, loyal and brave, who loves John Bold and will do anything to spare her father pain.
- John Bold A young surgeon and reformer who takes up the old men's cause and is torn between duty and love.
- Dr Theophilus Grantly The archdeacon, Harding's forceful son-in-law, who defends church revenues and expects everyone to follow him.
- Bunce The senior bedesman, faithful to the warden, who sees clearly what a lawsuit will cost the old men.
- Abel Handy A bitter old stonemason who leads the bedesmen demanding a hundred pounds a year each.
- The Bishop of Barchester Harding's gentle old friend, who hates quarrels and can offer only affection and the archdeacon's advice.
- Tom Towers A writer for The Jupiter who holds enormous hidden power and refuses to be influenced by anyone.
How it ends (spoiler)
Mr Harding resigns the wardenship, giving up eight hundred pounds a year, though family and lawyers beg him not to. The bishop refuses to appoint anyone else, so the hospital slowly decays and the old men suffer. Harding becomes rector of a tiny city church and remains precentor. Eleanor marries John Bold, and the archdeacon slowly makes peace with him. Mr Harding ends happy among those he loves, still playing his cello.

『院長』についての質問
What is The Warden by Anthony Trollope about?
It follows Septimus Harding, a kindly clergyman who runs an almshouse for twelve old men. When a young reformer questions his large income from an old will, Harding must decide what his conscience asks of him.
Who is who in The Warden?
Mr Harding is the warden. Eleanor is his daughter, John Bold the reformer who loves her, and Archdeacon Grantly is Harding's forceful son-in-law. Bunce is a loyal old pensioner, and Tom Towers writes for The Jupiter.
Is The Warden based on a true story?
The people are invented, but the issue is real. The novel appeared in 1855 amid public debate over church charities such as St Cross and Rochester, and reflects that controversy, though Barchester itself is imaginary.
Is The Warden easy to read?
Yes, the plain story is easy to follow. Chapters are short, the characters are vivid, and the narrator's friendly, joking voice carries you along, with comic scenes such as a tea party told like a battle.
What is the main message of The Warden?
The book shows that conscience matters more than comfort or approval. Trollope also questions how public opinion is made, and shows decent people on every side caught in a hard moral problem.
