わが生涯の物語――ある素描 in short
The True Story of My Life follows one boy from a single room in Odense to the courts of Europe. Andersen loses his father early, leaves for Copenhagen at fourteen and survives on the kindness of teachers, patrons and strangers. He suffers at a harsh school, then at the hands of critics and theater cliques.
What わが生涯の物語――ある素描 is about
What would you do if you left home at fourteen with a bundle of clothes and a dream no one around you understood? Hans Christian Andersen did exactly that. He walks into Copenhagen in 1819 with almost nothing in his pocket and sings in strangers' parlors.
The True Story of My Life is a sketch of that journey, written by Andersen in 1846 as a preface to his collected works.
対象読者. This book is for anyone who loves a rise from poverty told in the first person, and for readers curious about the man behind the fairy tales.

A poor shoemaker's son grows up dreaming
Andersen calls his life a lovely story that shows a loving God directs all things for the best. He is born in Odense on April 2, 1805. His parents live in one small room with a shoemaker's bench, a bed and his cradle.
His father is the hero of these pages. He makes toys and paper theaters for the boy and reads him plays and the Arabian tales. His mother keeps the room spotless and grows vegetables in a chest of soil on the roof. That little garden blooms again in The Snow Queen.
His grandmother works at an asylum, and the old women in the spinning room reward the boy with stories. He learns fear and wonder there. At the theater he imagines whole plays from the playbill titles.
The fairy tale master was shaped by a tiny, crowded room full of love, books and odd stories.

『わが生涯の物語――ある素描』についての質問
What is The True Story of My Life about?
It is Andersen's own account of his life up to 1846, from his poor childhood in Odense through his struggles in Copenhagen, his first books, his travels in Europe and the growth of his fame.
Why did Andersen write his autobiography?
He wrote it as a biographical sketch for a collected edition of his works. He also says the story of his life is the best commentary on all of his writings.
Does the book cover Andersen's fairy tales?
Yes, in part. He describes how his Stories for Children began in 1835, how critics first scorned them, how Thorwaldsen loved hearing them and how he read them aloud to kings and families.
Is The True Story of My Life easy to read?
It is told in a warm, direct voice, with short scenes, lively dialogue and many anecdotes about famous people. Each chapter follows a clear stage of his life, from childhood to travel.
Who is Jenny Lind in the book?
She is the Swedish singer whom Andersen first meets coldly in 1840 and later admires deeply. He credits her with teaching him the holiness of art, and she becomes a close friend.
