ストレットン街の事件 in short
The Stretton Street Affair follows an honest man who does one dishonest thing and then spends a year undoing it. Hugh Garfield signs a false death certificate for a millionaire, loses a month of his life, and sets out across Europe to learn why. Every clue brings a new puzzle, from a dead girl who seems alive to a banker who does not exist.
What ストレットン街の事件 is about
What would you do if a stranger in a rich man's house offered you five thousand pounds for one signature? Hugh Garfield, a young engineer who has just lost his savings, says yes. He wakes more than a month later in a French hospital, with gaps in his memory and his money held by the police.
The Stretton Street Affair is a mystery adventure by William Le Queux, told by Hugh himself as an open account of what he did. It carries him from a Westminster office to Florence, Madrid and Nîmes, with a poison that leaves no trace and a millionaire who seems to own every door. You get the plot step by step, with the clues that matter, and you stop before the end.

A helpful stranger opens the door to trouble
Hugh Garfield is twenty-nine, an electrical engineer in Westminster and a former pilot with a Military Cross. One winter evening he rides home from York in a first-class compartment. A polite Frenchman joins him and says he works for the Crédit Lyonnais in Paris. Over dinner Hugh tells him where he lives and what he does.
At home a letter from his solicitors is waiting. His investments have failed, and his aunt's legacy is gone. The next evening he takes a shortcut through Stretton Street, a quiet row of grand houses off Park Lane. A footman runs after him and begs him to see a master in trouble.
In a library with a log fire, Hugh meets Oswald De Gex, one of the richest men alive. De Gex is warm and frank, and Hugh feels flattered to be trusted. Then a sweet scent fills the room, Hugh's body turns stiff, and a scream comes from the next room. A favour asked by a polite stranger deserves a second thought.

『ストレットン街の事件』についての質問
What is The Stretton Street Affair about?
It follows engineer Hugh Garfield, who signs a false death certificate for a millionaire and loses a month of memory. He then chases the truth through London, Florence, Madrid and southern France, with a poison and a hidden identity at the centre.
Who is Oswald De Gex?
De Gex is a wealthy international financier who lives in Stretton Street, London, and at a villa near Florence. He seems generous and respected, yet Hugh comes to see him as the mind behind a carefully planned conspiracy.
What is orosin in the book?
Orosin is a fictional new poison in the story. Small doses wipe the memory, larger doses imitate death, and the largest kill quickly while leaving no sign a post-mortem could separate from natural heart failure.
What do the words red, green and gold mean?
They are the words a young woman, Gabrielle Tennison, repeats with horror after losing her memory. Hugh and the doctors try to learn what she saw, and the answer is part of the mystery's solution.
Is The Stretton Street Affair easy to follow?
Yes, in its clear, chatty first-person voice. Short chapters end on a question or a surprise, and Hugh explains each clue as he finds it, so the trail from city to city stays easy to follow.
