『マルドロールの歌』 in short
The Songs of Maldoror follows a hero who declares war on God and humanity. The first songs set out his nature through cruelty, pity and despair, a hymn to the ocean, and visions of a harsh Creator. The middle cantos swing between dreams, doubles and jokes, and the sixth turns toward a plot about the young Englishman Mervyn.
What 『マルドロールの歌』 is about
What would you do if a book began by telling you to turn back? The Songs of Maldoror opens with exactly that warning. The narrator tells the timid reader to flee, then describes a hero who was born wicked and chooses a career of evil.
Comte de Lautréamont was the pen name of a young man from Montevideo who wrote in Paris and died in 1870. His work comes in six cantos. It mixes prayer, curse, lecture and fairy tale, and its hero Maldoror hates God and people with an energy close to comedy. You get the whole shape of the work in order, and a guide to a voice that changes from page to page.
対象読者. This is for readers who love dark imagination, surrealist images, gothic atmosphere and daring experiments in form, and for anyone curious about the roots of modern poetry.

A narrator warns the reader to turn back
The book opens with a warning, not a welcome. The narrator says only a few can taste this bitter fruit safely. He tells the timid soul to turn back, like a flock of cranes that senses a storm and takes a safer path.
Then he mocks the reader, and this teasing sets a pattern. The voice flatters, insults and challenges in turn, and it never lets you sit comfortably.
Next comes Maldoror. He was good in his early years, then learned he was born wicked and launched himself into evil. He wanted to cut a smiling child's cheeks with a razor, and only fear of punishment stopped him. The narrator adds that the hero's proud thoughts are found in all people, so the cruelty becomes a mirror.
A small scene shows his isolation. He cuts the corners of his mouth with a penknife to copy human laughter, and it is not laughter at all. Read this book with a firm mind and a sharp sense of logic.

How it ends (spoiler)
Maldoror carries out his plan on the Place Vendôme. A man on top of the great column lowers a rope to Aghone, who holds Mervyn below and ties his feet to it. He whirls the young man faster and faster, then lets go. Mervyn flies across the Seine and strikes the dome of the Panthéon, where a dried skeleton now hangs. Rumors say students offer a short prayer when the wind moves it.

『『マルドロールの歌』』についての質問
What is The Songs of Maldoror about?
It follows Maldoror, a hero who is cruel by nature and wages war on God and humanity. Six cantos mix visions, dreams, short tales and sharp humor, and the last canto turns toward a story about a young Englishman named Mervyn.
Who is Maldoror?
Maldoror is the main figure and the voice of many passages. He is a wanderer who says he was born wicked, hides his face, speaks to animals, challenges the Creator and longs for a being who can match him.
Who was Comte de Lautréamont?
It was the pen name of Isidore Ducasse, born in Montevideo and living in Paris, who died in 1870. He published this work in the late 1860s and left little else, so he is known almost entirely through this book.
Is The Songs of Maldoror easy to follow?
It reads best as a series of vivid scenes. Each canto is made of short sections with their own images, characters and jokes, so you can enjoy them one at a time and let the voice carry you.
Why do the Surrealists admire The Songs of Maldoror?
They prized its free images, its sudden changes of mood and its dreamlike logic. Comparisons that join unlike things, animals that speak and scenes that break the rules of sense gave them a model for art that followed the mind's own leaps.
