オペラ座の怪人 in short
The Phantom of the Opera begins with a rumour and ends in a cellar. A young singer is taught by a voice that no one can find. Her childhood friend tries to break the spell and learns that the voice belongs to a man who lives beneath the Opera.
What オペラ座の怪人 is about
Who is the man in evening clothes who walks the Paris Opera without a sound? The ballet girls swear he has a skull for a face. A stagehand is found hanging in the cellars, and the rope vanishes. A private box stays empty every night, yet a voice is heard from it.
The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by Gaston Leroux, a French journalist who turned to fiction. He presents it as a true investigation, built from archives, witnesses and letters. You get a romance, a detective puzzle and a horror story in one book, with Christine Daae, Raoul de Chagny and Erik at its center.
対象読者. You will enjoy this book if you love gothic romance, theatre life, locked-room mysteries and hidden worlds beneath a great building. It suits anyone who likes a story told as a case file.

A ghost haunts the Opera and everyone has a story
On the night of a farewell gala, ballet girls burst into the dressing room of the dancer Sorelli and cry that they have seen the ghost. For months the whole building has talked of nothing else.
The description comes from Joseph Buquet, the chief scene shifter, a sober man not given to fancies. He says the figure is thin as a skeleton, with yellow skin stretched like a drumhead, two black holes for eyes and no nose at all. Little Meg Giry adds that the ghost has a private box, Box Five, which the box office has orders never to sell. Her mother has never seen him, but she hears him and hands him his program every night.
Then Buquet is found hanging in the third cellar. The inquest calls it suicide, but the rope has vanished before anyone can cut him down. Somebody must have wanted it gone.
In the Opera, a ghost story turns serious the moment a real man dies.

How it ends (spoiler)
Erik holds Christine and Raoul in his power, with the Opera mined with gunpowder. Christine saves the Persian and Raoul by agreeing to be his living wife. Moved when she weeps with him and kisses his forehead, Erik lets the two young people go, asking that she return to bury him. Count Philippe has already drowned near the lake. Erik dies soon after, of love, and his skeleton is later found wearing the ring.

『オペラ座の怪人』についての質問
What is The Phantom of the Opera about?
It follows a mysterious figure who haunts the Paris Opera, a young singer named Christine Daae who is taught by his voice, and the nobleman Raoul who loves her. The story moves from rumour to a daring rescue in the cellars.
Is The Phantom of the Opera a true story?
No. Leroux wrote a novel but framed it as a real investigation, with archives, witnesses and letters. The Paris Opera, its cellars and its underground lake are real places, which helps the invented story feel true.
Who is Erik in The Phantom of the Opera?
Erik is the man behind the ghost and the Angel of Music. He is a gifted singer, composer and builder with a terribly deformed face, who hides in the Opera's depths and longs for love.
Is The Phantom of the Opera easy to read?
Yes, it moves quickly. Short chapters, lively dialogue, comic scenes with the managers and clear cliffhangers keep the story flowing, and the narrator's friendly voice guides you through each mystery.
What is the Angel of Music in the novel?
It is a legend Christine's father told her, saying every great artist is visited by a heavenly teacher. Christine comes to believe the voice teaching her is this Angel, and the idea draws her into the story.
