建築家 in short
Halvard Solness, a self-taught builder at the top of his trade, is afraid that younger people will push him from his place. He guards it by holding down Ragnar and keeping Kaia close. Then Hilda Wangel appears, claiming a promise from ten years ago, and she pulls each secret out of him.
What 建築家 is about
What if a promise made to a young girl came due ten years later, in the person of a young woman at your door? That encounter follows an opening scene about Solness and his employees. On one autumn evening, a walker with a knapsack and an alpenstock enters the study of the builder Halvard Solness. She tells him he owes her a kingdom. He cannot recall the promise. She recalls every word of it.
Henrik Ibsen, the Norwegian playwright, published this play in December 1892, after he came home to Norway to live out his life. It has three acts and only a handful of people. Almost nothing happens on stage except people speaking, hiding, and half confessing. Yet every line moves the story, and above the talk stands a new house with a tower so high that people say it is too high for a dwelling. You get a quiet play that is fierce underneath, about a man who is afraid of the young.
対象読者. You will love this play if you enjoy drama built on conversation, secrets from the past, and people who test each other. It suits readers drawn to ambition and conscience, and to symbols you feel before you can explain them.

An old man begs for one more chance
The play opens in the work room of Halvard Solness. Knut Brovik, a thin old man, sits in the drawing office with his son Ragnar. Both are draughtsmen in Solness's pay. Knut is gravely ill and can hardly breathe. He has decided to speak to the chief that very night.
His request is plain. Ragnar is in his thirties and has never built a house under his own name. A young couple wants a villa at Lovstrand, and they like Ragnar's drawings. Knut asks Solness to look at them and to step aside from the commission. He also wants to see his son married to Kaia before he dies.
Solness refuses, and the scene shows his nature quickly. He says he will never retire and never give way to anybody. He admits the old man once employed him, and that he pushed his way up. When Brovik asks only for a word of encouragement for his son, Solness cannot give it. Brovik leaves on Ragnar's arm after bitterly wishing Solness sleep, if he can. Why would a man so successful guard his place so fiercely? Success has not made Solness feel safe. It has made him watchful.
A man who fears being replaced will crush even the people who depend on him.

How it ends (spoiler)
Solness goes down to the workmen, then climbs the scaffolding of his new tower with the wreath. Hilda watches, thrilled, and hears harps in the air. He hangs the wreath and waves his hat, and the crowd cheers. Then he falls into the quarry and is killed. Aline faints. Ragnar says he could not do it after all. Hilda answers that he reached the top, and calls out to her master builder.

『建築家』についての質問
What is The Master Builder about?
It follows Halvard Solness, a successful builder haunted by guilt and fear of younger rivals, when a young woman named Hilda Wangel arrives to claim a promise he made ten years earlier. It is a three-act play.
Who is Hilda Wangel in The Master Builder?
Hilda is a young woman from Lysanger who saw Solness hang a wreath on a church tower ten years ago. She arrives full of energy, calls herself a bird of prey, and demands her promised kingdom.
What do the nine dolls and the castles in the air mean?
The dolls stand for Aline's unspent love as a mother, and some critics read them as symbols. Castles in the air are the dreams Solness and Hilda say they will build together instead of real homes.
When was The Master Builder written and is it a true story?
Ibsen published it in December 1892, and its first performances followed in 1893. The plot is invented, though the introduction says a young woman Ibsen met in the Tyrol in 1889 helped inspire Hilda.
What is the main message of The Master Builder?
The play shows how ambition, guilt, and longing can shape a life. It asks what a person owes to others for success, and whether a sensitive conscience can bear the height a dream demands.
