『悲運の45年』のマンチェスター反乱者たち in short
The Manchester Rebels of the Fatal '45 follows a town through the days when a Highland army marches in. It begins with a stolen child in 1724 and a young man in 1745 who does not know his own name. A rescue, a daring boat ride and the eyes of Constance Rawcliffe push him toward the rebel cause.
What 『悲運の45年』のマンチェスター反乱者たち is about
What happens to a busy English town when a rebel army is due at its gates? William Harrison Ainsworth, who was born, raised and schooled in Manchester, builds his novel around that question. The Manchester Rebels of the Fatal '45 is set in November 1745, when Prince Charles Edward Stuart marches south with a Highland army and stays in the town for a few days.
The prince hopes for a great rising of English Jacobites. He finds cheering windows, bonfires, bold talk and a good many closed purses. Around real people the author places an invented hero, Atherton Legh, an apprentice who knows nothing of his birth. The story starts with a crime at midnight in 1724.
対象読者. Readers who love Jacobite history, Lancashire streets and landmarks, and romances shaped by conflicting love and loyalty will enjoy this novel. It also suits those curious about daily life under a rebel army.

A child is stolen from a moated hall
The story begins on an autumn night in 1724 as midnight falls over an ancient Cheshire mansion ringed by a wide, deep moat. Its owner has died, leaving a young widow and an infant son who is heir to the estate. She never lets the child out of her sight. Each night the drawbridge is raised, because the estates would pass to her late husband's brother if the boy should die.
Two figures approach the moat with a coracle, a light boat of wicker covered in leather. A candle glimmers in a window to guide them, which proves that someone inside is helping. The leader is a tall man in a long black cloak. He crosses the water, finds a side door open and puts on a mask before he climbs the back stairs.
On the gallery he meets the nurse, Bertha. She has agreed to his plan, but now she begs him to swear that he will not harm the child. The masked man puts out the lamp and takes the child. Bertha seizes him at the door, and he stabs her with his sword. The household believes she died defending the boy. The mother loses her senses and does not live long.
The question of where the child went hangs over every later meeting in the book.
