The Jungle Book in short

The Jungle Book is a set of seven tales in which animals and people live by rules and test those rules. Mowgli grows from a naked cub in a wolf cave into a boy who must choose between two worlds. Kotick the white seal sees what his people prefer not to see.

What The Jungle Book is about

What would you do if a tiger came to your door and demanded a baby? In the first tale of this book, two wolves say no, and a naked human child grows up in their cave. That scene opens The Jungle Book, a set of animal stories by Rudyard Kipling, who was born in India and wrote about its forests, villages and army camps.

The book gathers seven stories, and each comes with a poem or a song. Three follow Mowgli, the boy raised by wolves. The others tell of a white seal, a young mongoose, a boy who follows an elephant, and army animals who talk in the rain.

対象読者. You will love this book if you enjoy animal adventure, clever heroes in a strange world, tales of friendship and belonging, or stories that mix scenes of India with songs and gentle humor.

A wolf family shelters a human child

The book opens on a warm evening in the Seeonee hills. Tabaqui the jackal brings news that Shere Khan the tiger has moved his hunting ground to these hills. The wolves are angry, because by the Law of the Jungle a hunter must give warning before he changes his territory.

Shere Khan is hunting Man, and the Law forbids that, since a killing brings white men with guns and the whole jungle suffers. The tiger leaps at a woodcutter's campfire, burns his paws and misses. Meanwhile a naked toddler wanders into the wolves' cave, laughing. Father Wolf lifts the child in his jaws without a scratch and sets him among the cubs.

Shere Khan's great head fills the cave mouth, demanding his prey. Mother Wolf, who is named Raksha, the Demon, faces him down. She names the child Mowgli, the Frog, and tells the tiger the boy will one day hunt him. A small child wins a place because two parents choose kindness over safety.

A home is made by those who choose to protect you.

How it ends (spoiler)

Mowgli stampedes the buffaloes down a ravine and kills Shere Khan, then skins him. The villagers drive him out with stones, and he lays the tiger's hide on Council Rock, so both packs have cast him out. He hunts with his wolf brothers. Kotick leads thousands of seals through the Sea Cow's tunnel to a safe island. Rikki-tikki destroys both cobras and their eggs. Little Toomai is honored as Toomai of the Elephants. The camp animals march in review.
