ユダヤ人国家 in short

The Jewish State is one argument in a clear line. Herzl says that hostility to Jews grows from causes no kindness can remove, that assimilation and small colonies fail, and that the answer is sovereignty over a piece of land, settled by a people who choose to go. The machinery follows.

What ユダヤ人国家 is about

Can a pamphlet start a nation? In 1896 a Vienna journalist named Theodor Herzl believed it could. His short book, The Jewish State, reads like a business proposal. It shows how a scattered people might leave lands that treat them as strangers and build a country of their own.

Herzl wrote in the years of the Dreyfus case, when hostility to Jews was growing loud across Europe. He says his idea is a very old one. The parts are at hand, and one force will set them moving: the misery of the Jews. You will hear his reasons and his vivid examples.

対象読者. This is for readers drawn to the roots of modern politics, to the history of Zionism, and to bold plans set out with practical detail.

The 8 key ideas

A plan built on facts, not a dream

Herzl opens by shutting the door on one charge. He expects critics to call his plan a utopia, a pleasant fantasy of the kind Sir Thomas More wrote. He answers that his plan rests on a real and present force.

He uses a picture from engineering. A steam engine needs boiling water, cogs and wheels. Other writers invented elaborate machines with nothing to make them run. Herzl names the driving force that already exists and leaves the assembly to more skilled mechanics.

That force is the misery of the Jews. Efforts to curb anti-Semitism are like a lid lifting on a boiling kettle. The steam is real, but it is wasted. Harnessed, it could drive a large engine. He also defends figures he cannot yet prove. Every finance minister builds a budget on assumed numbers, and nobody calls a budget utopian. His sum of one billion marks is a working estimate that financiers will correct.

He expects to be mocked, and he doubts he will live to see the result. Herzl does not wait for a perfect design. He names a force, a method and a first step.

A bold plan becomes believable when it rests on a real driving force and honest estimates.

『ユダヤ人国家』についての質問

What is The Jewish State about?

It is a plan for founding a Jewish homeland. Herzl argues that anti-Semitism cannot be cured by assimilation, and he describes how a Society of Jews and a Jewish Company could organize land, money and a gradual, voluntary migration.

When did Herzl write The Jewish State and why?

He drafted it in 1895 and published it in Vienna in February 1896. He wrote in the years of the Dreyfus case, when hostility to Jews was growing, and he wanted a practical political answer.

What are the Society of Jews and the Jewish Company?

The Society is a corporate body that prepares the science and politics and negotiates with governments for the people. The Company is a business that sells property left behind and builds trade, housing and industry in the new land.

Does Herzl name where the state should be?

He names two options, Palestine and Argentina, and says the Society will take what is offered and what Jewish opinion chooses. He calls Palestine the ancient historic home whose name would draw the people.

Is The Jewish State easy to read?

Herzl writes in short, numbered-style chapters with plain headings, lively comparisons like the Longchamps racecourse and the steam engine, and direct answers to objections, so the argument is easy to follow from start to finish.
