引き潮 in short
The Ebb-Tide follows three men washed up on the beach at Papeete. Herrick, a clerk with a classical education, Davis, a sea captain who cannot forgive himself, and Huish, a petty and fearless clerk, take a plague-marked schooner and run. The cargo proves to be water, the food runs low, and an island appears that was never meant to be found.
What 引き潮 is about
Can a man fall so far that a crime looks like rescue? That is the question at the heart of The Ebb-Tide, a short novel by Robert Louis Stevenson and his stepson Lloyd Osbourne. It opens on a cold night in Papeete, Tahiti, where three men sit beneath a tree, hungry, destitute and living under assumed names.
Stevenson lived in the Pacific late in his life, and the book shows the islands without the postcards. You will meet a stolen schooner, a cargo that is not what it seems, a lost island with a secret and a host more frightening than any pirate.
対象読者. You will love this if you enjoy sea stories with real moral weight, characters who argue with their own conscience, vivid South Sea settings, and short novels where every scene tightens the pressure.

Three nameless outcasts share a cold Papeete beach
The story begins with failure, told in close detail. Three white men sit under a tree in Papeete, shivering in thin cotton clothes while influenza coughs along the shore. The islanders have a phrase for their state: on the beach. It means broke, homeless and finished.
Robert Herrick is an Oxford man with a worn copy of Virgil in his pocket. His father's firm collapsed, and Robert drifted through clerkships, dismissed from each as hopeless. He took a false name and a ticket to the islands, hoping for a pleasant failure. What he finds is a hungry one.
Beside him sit a disgraced American captain calling himself Brown and a sickly Cockney clerk who uses the names Hay and Tomkins. Herrick finds the clerk vile, yet both men hold him up through his coughing fits. To pass the dark hours, they tell each other what they would do with a wish. Each daydream shows what the man has lost.
When hope is gone, even the stories men tell themselves begin to break.

The ending is short. The Trinity Hall is sighted approaching the island, and Herrick later points out the burning Farallone to Davis as the captain prays on the beach. Davis, by now a changed man, is found praying on the beach, and says he has found peace in believing. He asks Herrick to join him and tells him to say, Lord, I believe, help my unbelief.
