るつぼ in short

Watch the secrets, who knows Jean's history and what each does with it. Listen for the moments when she must choose between protecting herself and standing by someone who needs her, because the whole book turns on those choices.

What るつぼ is about

What would you do at seventeen, furious at being born a girl, shut in a state reformatory for chasing your mother and sister with a machete? That is where The Crucible begins. Jean Fanshaw, who insists that everyone calls her Jack, stands stiffly while a superintendent tells her she cannot escape her sex.

Mark Lee Luther wrote this novel about a young American woman who must make a self out of nothing. Jean serves her time and goes to New York, where she sews, sells toys, works in a dental office and models for artists, always with a past she must hide.

対象読者. You will love this book if you enjoy a spirited heroine, a vivid early twentieth century New York, and a plot that mixes comedy, romance and social conscience.

The story in 10 parts

A furious girl arrives at the refuge

Jean Fanshaw is seventeen when the key turns in her door. The superintendent, Miss Blair, takes down her answers with a cold pencil, and Jean answers with scorn and wit.

Jean says she was never meant to be a girl. Her parents were so sure of a boy that they had picked the name John, after her father. He was a druggist who taught his younger daughter to swim, box, shoot and fish. When he died, Jean lost the only person who took her as she was.

Her mother praises her sister Amelia as the model daughter. Jean is the disgrace. After a bitter quarrel she grabbed a Cuban machete and went after them. She says she only meant to frighten them, but she nicked Amelia's arm. A magistrate called her incorrigible and sent her away.

The rules feel like fresh insults. The matron takes away the little clay bust her father made, because no pictures of men are allowed. A person who despises what she is has a long way to go before she can change.

Is this The Crucible by Arthur Miller?

No. This is a novel by Mark Lee Luther about a young woman, a reformatory and early twentieth century New York. It is not the play about the Salem witch trials, which is a different work.

Who are Amy and Stella in The Crucible?

Amy Jeffries is Jean's gentle friend from the refuge, who awaits her in New York. Stella Wilkes is a bold girl from Jean's hometown who leads a riot and keeps turning up later in the city.

A crucible is a vessel in which metal is melted and tested by heat. The title suggests Jean's life, where the refuge, the city and her own past test her character like fire.

Yes, in the sense that it moves briskly. The chapters are short, the dialogue is lively, the plot is full of escapes and surprises, and the humor of the boardinghouse scenes keeps the pages turning.
