コサック in short
The Cossacks is the story of a young man who leaves a world he finds empty in search of one that feels real. Olénin sees the Caucasus mountains and settles in a Cossack village, where he meets the old hunter Eróshka, the proud warrior Lukáshka, and the beautiful Maryánka. He tries one theory after another.
What コサック is about
Picture a winter night in Moscow. Three friends sit over the remains of a supper, and one of them is about to climb into a sledge at four in the morning. He is twenty-four, rich, restless, and sure that a new life is waiting for him in the Caucasus. Is he right?
The Cossacks is a short novel by Leo Tolstoy, who served in the Caucasus himself as a young man. It came out in 1863. It follows Dmítri Olénin, a cadet who settles in a Cossack village on the river Térek, among hunters, warriors and women who run their households with iron hands. You get a young man's search for happiness, a village that lives by its own rules, and a love that good intentions cannot win.

A restless young man leaves Moscow behind
The book opens at Chevalier's Restaurant, where Olénin says goodbye to two friends. He talks warmly about himself and the fresh start he is certain to make. One friend predicts he will make a mess of things again.
Olénin is twenty-four, an orphan, rich, and free of every duty. He has tried university, office work, farming, music and love, and dropped each one the moment it asked for effort. As the sledge rolls south, his mind builds castles in the air. He pictures winning fame among mountain tribesmen, and a lovely Circassian slave girl waiting at the door of a hut. Then he calls his dreams nonsense, only to start dreaming again at the next post station.
He loves himself most of all, and the book is honest about it. He believes in nothing, yet he longs to be swept away by something. That longing drives the whole story.
A new place cannot fix a person unless the person is ready to be changed.

『コサック』についての質問
What is The Cossacks by Tolstoy about?
It follows Dmítri Olénin, a rich young Muscovite who joins the army in the Caucasus and lives in a Cossack village. There he befriends an old hunter, admires a Cossack girl named Maryánka, and searches for real happiness.
Is The Cossacks based on a true story?
It is a work of fiction, but Tolstoy drew on his own years of army service in the Caucasus. It was published in 1863, and its landscape, customs and daily life come from what he saw.
Who are Lukáshka and Daddy Eróshka?
Lukáshka is a young, brave Cossack who kills a raider and is promised to Maryánka. Eróshka is the old hunter, his neighbor and relative, who becomes Olénin's friend and teacher in the ways of the village.
What does the word kunak mean in The Cossacks?
A kunak is a sworn friend or guest friend in Caucasian custom. Gifts, hospitality and loyalty bind kunaks, which is why Olénin's gifts to Lukáshka and Eróshka mean so much, and why they are misunderstood.
Is The Cossacks worth reading?
Yes, for readers who like vivid settings and thoughtful characters. It is a compact novel with short chapters, clear scenes, lively dialogue, and a main character whose hopes and mistakes feel recognizable.
