候補者 in short
The Candidate follows one campaign from a convention hall at midnight to the final returns. A young Western lawyer becomes his party's nominee almost by accident, and Harley rides beside him through five months of speeches, storms and surprises. Grayson wins people by sincerity and warmth, and he must decide whether to obey the rich backers who want him quiet.
What 候補者 is about
What happens when a young lawyer from the far West learns in the middle of the night that he is the nominee for President of the United States? In The Candidate, a newspaper correspondent named Harley runs through the streets to be the first to tell him. James Madison Grayson, whom his neighbors call Jimmy, never expected the prize.
Joseph A. Altsheler, an American novelist who died in 1919, wrote this political romance around a single race, from the June convention to the first Tuesday in November. It joins a campaign to a love story, a murder mystery and dry humor. Under it runs one question: what does a man owe his conscience when rich backers want him quiet?
対象読者. This book suits readers who enjoy American history, election campaigns and speeches, and anyone who likes a warm romance, a touch of mystery and a hero who wins people with kindness.

A dark horse wins the nomination overnight
Applause roars through an enormous convention hall after a fierce struggle. Grayson, a young lawyer with little more than a local name, has been chosen by his party. He wins because every better known man has a fault that someone can name, and nobody can find one in him.
Harley, a correspondent fresh from a war abroad, senses the result before it comes. At midnight he sprints through the streets, dodging a policeman who takes him for a pickpocket. In the hotel room, Grayson and his wife, Anna, know nothing. Harley asks what he would do if he were nominated, and Grayson says a wise public man never answers such questions. Harley says he must, because it has already happened. The candidate flushes, then goes white.
Next morning Grayson opens the door himself and calls his wife his chief political adviser. On the streetcar, strangers call the nominee Jimmy, and nobody means any disrespect. Harley's editor wires that he must stay with Grayson until election night.
A great office can fall to an ordinary man who never schemed for it.
