The Book of the Damned in short
The Book of the Damned makes one argument and supports it with a mountain of examples. Science builds its sense of completeness by excluding data, and the lines of exclusion are arbitrary because nature blends one thing into another. Each chapter lists cases outside the lines, from strange rains and falling fish to shaped stones, ignored observations and moving lights.
What The Book of the Damned is about
What if the facts that do not fit are the most useful ones? Charles Fort asks that question and answers it with a procession of everything science has shut out.
The Book of the Damned appeared in 1919. Fort, an American who spent years in libraries reading journals and newspapers, collected reports that textbooks leave out. Ink-black rains, fish on dry streets, a stone disk fallen from the sky and lights that wheel over the sea all take their turn. Behind the oddities sits an argument that every line between accepted and excluded facts is arbitrary. You will hear his case and his jokes.

Science excludes data to look complete
Fort begins with a parade. He pictures the facts that science has thrown out as columns marching past, some solemn, some silly, all condemned. By the damned he means the excluded. His warning is that today's outcasts may one day do the excluding.
His reasoning rests on continuity. Red and yellow blend into orange, so any line between red facts and yellow facts must fall in the wrong place. A barn is a house if someone lives in it, and so is a bird's nest. If nothing differs absolutely from anything else, every boundary is a convenience.
Fort asks the reader to accept ideas for now, not to believe them forever. Belief hardens a mind, while acceptance lets thought keep growing. Science looks finished only because it keeps its most awkward evidence out of sight.

『The Book of the Damned』についての質問
What is The Book of the Damned about?
It is a collection of reports that Charles Fort says science excludes, such as falls of fish, frogs, jelly and shaped stones, plus strange lights in the sky, with an argument that exclusion is arbitrary.
What does the word damned mean in the title?
Fort uses damned to mean excluded. The damned are facts and reports that accepted science has ruled out, and he warns that they may one day become the accepted ones.
What is the Super-Sargasso Sea?
It is Fort's name for an imagined region above the earth where objects hang beyond ordinary gravity until storms shake them down. He offers it as a tentative idea to explain repeated falls.
Is the book a true account and when was it written?
The reports come from real journals and newspapers that Fort cites by volume and page. It appeared in 1919. His explanations are speculative, and he calls them provisional himself.
