モロのジャングル少年ピアンの冒険 in short

This is the story of a boy, chosen by a star and tested by a hermit, who grows from a proud youth into a trusted guide between two worlds. Through all of Piang's adventures, Sicto follows, jealous and ready to betray. What you keep is a hero's way of meeting trouble.

What モロのジャングル少年ピアンの冒険 is about

Two boys, one mountain, and a hermit nobody has seen for a generation. Which boy will reach Ganassi Peak first and be named the true charm boy of his tribe?

That is how The Adventures of Piang the Moro Jungle Boy begins, with a ceremony in a jungle clearing on the island of Mindanao, in the southern Philippines. Florence Partello Stuart wrote it after living among the native peoples of the southern islands. She says Piang is a real boy and Dato Kali Pandapatan a real Moro chief. Ten adventures join into one tale of a boy growing up. You get crocodiles, floating islands, typhoons and American soldiers, with a rival named Sicto always close behind.

対象読者. You will enjoy this book if you love jungle adventure, daring escapes, clever boys who outwit bullies, animal encounters, and faraway islands where soldiers and chiefs meet.

The story in 8 parts

A ceremony sends two boys into the jungle

The story opens in the hills of Mindanao, where the people of Dato Kali Pandapatan gather in a clearing. Piang, a proud youth in a crimson sash, is believed to be the charm boy, the one chosen to lead the tribe. But a second boy was born under the same star that night. He is Sicto, a boy of mixed blood, with a shambling walk and eyes that never meet anyone's.

Old Pandita Asin, the priest, offers a test. A hermit named Ganassi lives on a far peak, and he will know the true charm boy. Each boy must reach him alone, one by the jungle and hills, the other by the river and lake. Kali tosses his dagger into the air to settle who chooses first. The blade lands point down, so Piang chooses the river. A small slave girl named Papita watches him go.

Piang paddles a canoe he carved himself, and it skims like a dragonfly. Then he pokes a floating log with his paddle, and the log is a crocodile. He knows a crocodile has only two weak spots, so he waits for one clean thrust. Later a whirlpool grips the boat, and he dives with his knife to cut the roots that hold it.

At dusk he walks into a village that offers him a night's welcome. Courage in this book comes with patience, because Piang waits for his one clear chance.
