宇宙と時間の物語 in short

Tales of Space and Time moves from a London shop to Mars, from a wandering star to the Stone Age, from a city of the twenty-second century to a pub in a country town. Each story hands an ordinary person something far too large to manage. A lonely shopkeeper guards a crystal that opens onto another planet.

What 宇宙と時間の物語 is about

What if a polished glass egg in a junk shop window could show you another world? In Tales of Space and Time, H. G. Wells gathers five stories, and each one takes a single wild idea and follows it as far as it will go. A crystal links a London shop to Mars. A strange star rushes in from the dark toward Earth. A hunter and a girl of the Stone Age run for their lives. A couple from the twenty-second century fall through the floors of an enormous city. A clerk in a country pub learns that his will can command the world.

Wells wrote these tales around 1899, after The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds. He sets huge events beside very small people, with dry humour and a steady sense of dread.

対象読者. This book is for readers who love big ideas told through small, lively people: fans of early science fiction, other planets, deep time and future cities.

A shopkeeper hides the crystal he loves

The Crystal Egg opens in a grimy shop near Seven Dials, owned by Mr Cave, a dealer in antiquities. His window holds tusks, skulls, stuffed monkeys and one polished crystal shaped like an egg. A tall clergyman and a dark young man stop to admire it. Mr Cave, to everyone's surprise, does not want to sell.

He names a price of five pounds, far more than he meant to ask, and then he tries to wriggle out of the deal. His wife storms in and tells him to take the money. Then the crystal disappears from the window, and the family accuses one another. The egg is safe in the rooms of Mr Wace, a young hospital demonstrator.

One sleepless night Cave saw the crystal glowing in a thin ray of light. His wife and stepchildren treat him with spite, and the glow becomes the one private joy he owns.

The strangest treasure matters most to the person who has nothing else.

Ugh-lomi survives the lion and rules the tribe until he is killed in turn. Bindon, dying, leaves Elizabeth his fortune, and she and Denton rest on a balcony. Fotheringay stops the spinning earth, wrecks the world, and undoes it all, forgetting everything.
