政治家 in short
The Statesman asks what a ruler is, and answers that a ruler is someone who knows how to command for the good of the whole. The Stranger first sorts the idea into a herdsman, then sees that this picture is crowded with rivals. A myth separates the divine shepherd from the human ruler, and the loom gives the model for the real task.
What 政治家 is about
What makes a person fit to rule a city? Is it wealth, birth, or the vote of a crowd? In the Statesman, a visitor from Elea, the Eleatic Stranger, answers by a winding road through animal herds, a universe running backward and wool weaving.
Plato wrote this dialogue in the fourth century BC, as a companion to the Sophist. Socrates listens while the Stranger questions a young man who shares his name. You meet a definition that fails, a myth that corrects it, and a model from weaving that does the job.
対象読者. This is for readers who enjoy watching an argument built step by step, and for anyone curious about how law and wisdom fit together in a good ruler.

Ruling is a kind of knowledge that commands
The dialogue opens with a short exchange among Theodorus, Socrates and the Stranger. Theodorus promises that after the Sophist they will outline the Statesman and the Philosopher. Then Socrates steps back, and the Stranger takes Young Socrates as his partner.
The Stranger makes his first claim at once. The statesman belongs among those who know. Some knowledge is purely theoretical, like arithmetic. Some is practical, like carpentry, where knowing shows itself in things made. A king does little with his hands and much with his mind, so he stands on the side of knowledge.
The title does not depend on holding office. A private person who can advise a ruler has the ruler's science. Next comes a finer cut. Some knowledge only judges, like the calculator. Some also commands, like the master builder, who gives each worker a task. The king commands on his own authority, while the herald only passes on orders. This shifts the question. We stop asking who holds power and start asking what a ruler knows.
A true ruler is defined by the knowledge of how to command, not by a title.

『政治家』についての質問
What is Plato's Statesman about?
It asks what a true ruler is. The Eleatic Stranger defines the statesman by repeated division, tells a myth of a reversing universe, and uses weaving as a model. He argues that real rule is knowledge, and that law is a second-best guide.
Who is the Eleatic Stranger?
He is the Eleatic Stranger, whom Theodorus has introduced to Socrates. He leads the inquiry following the Sophist, while Socrates steps aside and Young Socrates replaces Theaetetus as the Stranger's respondent.
Why does Plato compare the statesman to a weaver?
Weaving gives a small, clear model of how a ruling art works. The weaver directs helpers and joins warp and weft, and the statesman likewise joins bold and gentle citizens into one fabric through shared beliefs.
What is the myth of Cronos in the Statesman?
The Stranger describes two ages. In one, God guides the world and shepherds humankind, and life is effortless. In ours, the world runs on its own and people must govern themselves, so rulers are human, not divine.
What is the main message of the Statesman?
Good rule depends on knowledge, not on wealth, numbers or title. Because such knowers are rare, cities need laws, but laws are rough copies of wisdom. A healthy city also blends courage and moderation in its people.
