Sir Henry Morgan, once the most feared buccaneer in the Caribbean and now the knighted Vice-Governor of Jamaica, knocks one officer senseless, bluffs a troop of horsemen, and burns down his own house. By the next night he is a pirate again, with a stolen royal frigate under his feet.

Sir Henry Morgan, Buccaneer was written by Cyrus Townsend Brady and finished in 1902. It is a work of imagination built around a real man, with a Spanish soldier as hero and an Englishman as villain. You get ambushes, broadsides, a wreck in a gale, a siege and a love story on the coast of Venezuela.

Morgan turns ten minutes into an escape
It is the summer of 1685, and Sir Henry Morgan sits alone in a handsome room above Spanish Town, drinking rum with his plumed hat still on. His wife has just died upstairs. His silent servant Black Dog keeps the glass full.
Then horsemen arrive with an order bearing a royal seal. King James now rules, and a new Governor has landed. Morgan is to be arrested for murder, theft and treason and shipped to England. He has ten minutes to come quietly.
Morgan spends them like a man dealing cards. He seizes the lieutenant by the wrist and strikes him down with a rum decanter. Black Dog presses a pistol to the ensign's forehead, and Morgan forces the young man to tell the troop outside that their prisoner has surrendered. Burned remains will persuade the island that he is dead, and nobody hunts a dead man.
A man who has ruled by terror needs only ten minutes to turn a trap into a plan.

How it ends (spoiler)

Alvarado's mother proves to be the abbess who died on the sands. Fra Antonio produces the marriage certificate hidden in the cross, showing that Alvarado is Don Francisco de Guzman, a Governor's legitimate son and not Morgan's child. He is free to marry Mercedes. Morgan is chained on a tidal rock and left to God's judgment. Hornigold watches him suffer, then goes mad and wades into the sea.
