シュー・バー・ストラットン in short

At its heart, Shoe-Bar Stratton is the story of a man who comes home to find his place taken and decides to learn why before he claims it. Buck hides behind a false name, works as a hired hand, and gathers clues about rustling, injuries, a cattle plague, a forged note, and a foreman who wants the ranch emptied of anyone who might look too closely. You meet clear characters, from loyal Bud Jessup to sharp Mrs.

What シュー・バー・ストラットン is about

Picture a man stepping off a train in a sleepy Arizona town, glad to be home, and learning within the hour that a woman he has never met owns his ranch. That is how Shoe-Bar Stratton begins. Buck Stratton, a Texas cattleman, has lost a whole year of his life to a head wound in the Great War, and the army listed him as killed or missing.

Joseph Bushnell Ames sets this western just after the war, and it moves like a good detective tale on the open range. Buck gives a false name, hires on as a cowhand, and tries to learn what is wrong at the Shoe-Bar. Cattle vanish, cowboys are hurt, and a handsome foreman named Tex Lynch watches his every step. You get the people, the dangers, and the puzzles, along with ideas about identity, memory, and trust.

対象読者. You will love this book if you enjoy cowboy stories with a mystery at the centre, a hero hiding his name, a brave heroine, a villain with charm, and chapters that end on a cliffhanger.

The story in 7 parts

A soldier comes home to a stolen ranch

The book opens at the little station of Paloma Springs, where Buck Stratton stands in the September heat and breathes deeply. He bought the Shoe-Bar ranch in western Arizona just before he enlisted. Now he is home after two years, and an ordinary cow town feels like cool water.

A shadow crosses his face as he thinks of the missing year. A bullet at Belleau Wood pressed on his brain. He has recovered his old memories, and he learned that he had been called Robert Green while unidentified. He wants only to forget the whole strange business.

In the store he meets Pop Daggett, who tells the ranch's story to anyone who stands still. The Shoe-Bar now belongs to a woman named Mary Thorne. Her father, Andrew Thorne of Chicago, arrived with the sheriff and a deed claiming Buck sold the place a few weeks before he sailed. Thorne died four months ago when a paint horse threw him.

Buck knows he sold nothing. Thorne was a lawyer he trusted with his papers, so forgery seems the only answer. He gives Pop the name Bob Green, buys chaps, boots, and a Colt, and rents a roan. Pop warns him off, but Buck rides the eighteen miles anyway.

A man who returns from the dead learns that the world has moved on without him, and he must choose how much to say.
