銀の枠に収められて in short

Set in Silver tells of a favor that goes much further than anyone planned. Audrie Brendon agrees to pose as her friend Ellaline for a few weeks, and she ends up traveling the length of England beside the guardian she was told to fear. The man she meets does not match the portrait.

What 銀の枠に収められて is about

What would you do if your closest friend begged you to lie to a stranger for six weeks, and her whole future hung on your answer? Audrie Brendon, a singing teacher at a French finishing school, faces that choice in the opening pages of Set in Silver. Her richest pupil, Ellaline Lethbridge, wants to elope with a French lieutenant and asks Audrie to take her place and meet her stern guardian, Sir Lionel Pendragon.

The book is a romance told almost entirely in letters, written by the husband and wife C. N. Williamson and A. M. Williamson. You get a comedy of mistaken identity, a love that grows letter by letter, and a motor tour of England past castles and abbeys.

対象読者. If you love witty letters, English villages and ruined castles, and a romance between two people who each hide something, this book is for you. It suits road-trip dreamers and fans of heroines who talk back.

A debt of gratitude becomes a dangerous promise

Audrie Brendon teaches singing at a finishing school near Paris. She is nearly twenty-one, and money is short, so she and her mother live on her small salary. Her mother rests at a Swiss spa, and Audrie writes to her almost every day.

The job exists only because Ellaline Lethbridge, the school's richest pupil, insisted on it. Now Ellaline asks for payment. She has secretly promised herself to a French officer, and her guardian is about to arrive from India. She is sure he will forbid the match.

Her plan is bold. Audrie will meet the guardian at the station as Ellaline and play the ward for five or six weeks. Audrie sees every danger, but she cannot refuse the girl who rescued her. Her mother prizes gratitude above every virtue and telegrams yes. Gratitude can lead a good person into a risky lie.

It follows a singing teacher who poses as a pupil's identity to repay a debt. She tours England by motorcar with the girl's guardian, hiding her secret while their friendship grows. The story is told in letters.

Why is the book called Set in Silver?

The title comes from the Shakespeare speech printed at the front, which calls England a precious stone set in a silver sea. The story presents England as a jewel seen from a motorcar.

Who is Sir Lionel Pendragon?

He is a Cornish baronet, a Victoria Cross holder, and a former lieutenant-governor of East Bengal. He is forty, returns to England to claim a castle, and already serves as guardian to the girl Audrie impersonates.

Is Set in Silver a true story?

No, it is fiction by C. N. Williamson and A. M. Williamson. The characters are invented, but the towns, castles, roads and abbeys on the route are real places a motorist could visit.

Is Set in Silver easy to read?

Yes, in the sense that its short letters, comic voice and quick scenes make it welcoming. Each letter is a small episode, and Audrie's playful style carries you through the story.
