セントローレンス川のルース・フィールディング in short
At its core, this is a story about a young woman defending her work and her friends against a man who sees them as property. Ruth Fielding has to bring a film pageant to the screen, keep her Osage star safe from a rival producer, and manage friends tangled in jealousy. The wedding at the start plants the knots, and the river tightens them.
What セントローレンス川のルース・フィールディング is about
A wedding breakfast is in full swing on Madison Avenue when a lump of plaster drops onto Tom Cameron's plate. The ceiling is tearing loose, and the worst of it hangs over the chair where Ruth Fielding sits.
Ruth Fielding on the St. Lawrence was written by Alice B. Emerson, a pen name used by a publishing syndicate, for young readers just after the First World War. Ruth now writes scenarios for a film company, and she travels with her star Wonota, an Osage girl, and Wonota's father, Chief Totantora, to the Thousand Islands to shoot a pageant of early French Canada. You get a rival producer who will stoop to kidnapping, a harmless old man who claims to be a king, and a river full of mist and strange boats.
対象読者. Readers who love lively girls' adventures with a central mystery will enjoy this novel. It also suits those curious about how silent films were made, and anyone drawn to summer stories of islands and rivers.

A wedding where the ceiling gives way
The story opens in a New York church, packed for the marriage of Jennie Stone to Major Henri Marchand, a French officer who has come to fetch his bride. Ruth Fielding is maid of honor, and Tom Cameron, an American captain, is best man. Jennie smiles at her friends and beams at her husband all the way down the aisle.
At the breakfast, Tom sees where the seating plan has put him. He sits across the table from Ruth, and beside her sits Chessleigh Copley, a fair-haired former sergeant everyone calls Lasses. Chess talks to Ruth, and she talks back with great interest. Tom's brows draw together.
Then a piece of plaster falls onto Tom's plate. Chess kicks his chair aside and drags Ruth clear just as the heavy patch crashes down where they sat. Nobody is hurt, and Jennie turns the scare into a toast.
Chess holds Ruth longer than Tom thinks necessary, and Tom tells him sharply to break away. The rivalry between the two young men becomes open.
A good opening scene shows who will clash with whom before the plot has begun.
