ロビン・リネット in short
Robin Linnet starts as a comedy of youth. Two Cambridge friends joke, wrestle and play cricket in a college guarded by dons who believe nothing should change. Meanwhile Robin's mother runs the most brilliant weekend parties in England, where everyone lives for the moment.
What ロビン・リネット is about
Two friends sit in a candlelit room at St. Stephen's College, Cambridge, reading Socrates. Within minutes the Greek is forgotten. Whisky, a soda siphon, a piece of ice down a collar and a tied-up visitor take over. How long can that last?
Robin Linnet is a novel by E. F. Benson, set in the last summer before the First World War and the months that follow. Robin, nicknamed Birds, and his friend Jim care only for cricket and a good joke, while his dazzling mother, Lady Grote, fears dullness. You get college dons, glittering London weekends and a hospital where a spoiled hostess learns what service means.

Two friends share a carefree Cambridge life
The book opens on a hot night in early May. Jim Lethbridge is twenty and Robin Linnet is nineteen, and they have known each other since Eton. They read Plato by one stolen candle, because the electric light has failed.
The Greek does not last. Robin drops a piece of ice down Jim's collar, and a wrestling match follows. A third friend, Badders, looks in and is tied up like a fowl while the others throw paper darts into his open mouth. Robin also dresses in cap and gown over bare skin and imitates his tutor.
The mood changes on the walk to the bridge. The two stand in the starlight and listen to a nightingale. Robin asks what will happen when Cambridge ends. Jim answers that their friendship is part of them now, like footprints in the dew that will always be waiting.
The bond between Robin and Jim is the warm centre the rest of the book will test.
