Rilla of Ingleside in short
Rilla of Ingleside follows one family and one village through the Great War, seen from the home front. Rilla begins as a pretty, careless girl who wants parties. As brothers and friends leave for the trenches, she learns to work, wait, forgive and love, and she raises a war orphan she once thought she could never like.
What Rilla of Ingleside is about
What happens to a girl who wants nothing more than a good time, when the whole world goes to war? Rilla Blythe is fourteen going on fifteen, vain, cheerful and sure her best years will be full of dances and admirers. Her first grown-up party ends with a telegram, and nothing after it is the same.
Rilla of Ingleside was written by L. M. Montgomery and closes the Anne of Green Gables family story. It follows Anne's youngest daughter on Prince Edward Island through the Great War. The fighting never shows on a battlefield. It reaches the Glen by mail, by telephone and at the railway station.
対象読者. This book suits readers who love warm, funny family stories, strong-minded housekeepers, small-town gossip and girls who grow up fast. If you enjoy diaries, letters and loyal animals, you will feel at home.

A golden afternoon hides the coming storm
The book opens in the summer of 1914 at Ingleside, the Blythe family home in Glen St. Mary. Susan Baker, the housekeeper, reads the local notes aloud and savors each name. A headline about an archduke killed in Sarajevo gets no attention from her. To Susan, news that matters means who visited whom.
Around her the whole family comes into view. Doctor Blythe and his wife Anne are warm and teasing. Their children Jem, Walter, Nan, Di, Shirley and Rilla fill the house and lawn. Even the cat has two natures, and he is called Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde because he purrs one hour and spits the next.
Rilla tells her teacher, Miss Oliver, that she wishes something dramatic would happen. Miss Oliver begs her not to wish for it. She says a perfect time is only a gift laid down before a payment.
The book shows ordinary life in all its comfort so that its loss can be felt.
