A ring brings a lost father to London
Adams is sixty-five, tall and lean, the son of a Cumberland farmer. He has lived for decades in Egypt and the desert. His only son, Roderick, was stolen by slave raiders at the age of twelve.
On a December evening he knocks at the rooms of his old friend Professor Higgs in Guildford Street. Higgs is short, stout and red-bearded, and he is having dinner with a young engineer, Captain Oliver Orme.
Adams tells his tale. He followed his son's voice to a sacred valley of the Fung people, heard him sing a hymn, called out and was chased away. The Abati of Mur, a mountain tribe, saved him. Their ruler, Maqueda, called the Child of Kings, promised help if he would bring back explosives to destroy the Fung idol, a sphinx the size of a small mountain.
Higgs reads the Hebrew on the ring, then calls it a clever fake. Yet he cannot resist the treasures buried in the caves of Mur. Orme has just lost an inheritance and a fiancée, and nothing keeps him at home. Adams does not hide his shame about the night he fled instead of fighting for his son.

How it ends (spoiler)
The explosion does not shatter the idol but throws its head onto the cliff above Mur. Quick dies defending Maqueda. After a trial in which she seems to betray the Englishmen, they are driven out. In truth she bargained with Joshua to save them. The Fung then storm Mur, and she escapes, rides after them and offers Oliver the ring.
