プークが丘の妖精 in short
Puck of Pook's Hill follows two children in a Sussex valley who are given the right to see its past. Puck, the last of the old spirits, calls up one visitor after another. Puck tells of a fallen god, while a Norman knight, a Roman officer, a master builder and a Jewish moneylender tell their stories.
What プークが丘の妖精 is about
What would you ask for if a fairy stepped out of the bushes on Midsummer Eve? Two children in Sussex, Dan and Una, act out a play by Shakespeare three times in a ring of dark grass. By doing so they call up Puck, the oldest Old Thing in England.
Puck of Pook's Hill was written by Rudyard Kipling and published in 1906. It shows how a single valley can hold a whole nation's past. A Norman knight, a Roman officer and a master builder each tell their own story. You get adventure, humour, pirates, a lost treasure and a wall at the edge of an empire.

Two children call up Puck in a fairy ring
The book opens on Midsummer Eve in a meadow called the Long Slip. Dan and Una act out a short version of A Midsummer Night's Dream three times in a fairy ring beside a millstream, with Pook's Hill rising behind them.
A small brown figure with pointed ears and a wide grin steps out of the alders. He is Puck, and he is delighted. By playing that play, on that night, in that place, the children have broken the Hills. Puck says the People of the Hills have left England and that he alone remains. He refuses to be called a fairy.
He cuts two squares of turf and offers them to the children. This is seizin, the old custom for handing over land. By taking it, they gain the right to see and hear what happened here long ago. After each visit, Puck makes them chew leaves of oak, ash and thorn so that they forget. A meadow can hold a whole history if someone shows you where to look.

Characters, plot and themes

- Una Dan's gentle sister, who feels for each visitor, grasps their feelings quickly, and wants the tales told in full.
- Sir Richard Dalyngridge A Norman knight who comes to love the Saxon valley he was given, and keeps Weland's sword.

How it ends (spoiler)
Each visit ends with oak, ash and thorn leaves that make the children forget what they have seen. In the last tale, Kadmiel tells how he sank a hoard of gold in the sea so that a law might be signed, then vanishes in the woods. Puck sends the children racing home through the cold dusk. They hear his voice from the far bank of the brook, and go in singing, having forgotten to say good night.

『プークが丘の妖精』についての質問
What is Puck of Pook's Hill about?
It follows two children, Dan and Una, who meet Puck in a Sussex meadow. Puck calls up figures from the past, such as a Norman knight and a Roman officer, whose stories connect the children's countryside with England's wider history.
Who is Puck in Puck of Pook's Hill?
Puck is the last of the old spirits of England, often called the oldest Old Thing. He dislikes the word fairy. He is the same Puck as in Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, and he guides the children through time.
Is Puck of Pook's Hill a true story?
The children and the fairy frame are made up, but many settings, events and customs come from real history, such as the Battle of Hastings, Hadrian's Wall and Magna Carta. It was published in 1906.
What do oak, ash and thorn mean in the book?
They are the three trees Puck says he came to England with. He uses their leaves to make the children forget each visit, and they stand for the lasting English countryside, so Puck's own life is tied to theirs.
Is Puck of Pook's Hill easy to read?
Yes, in the sense that each tale is short and told by a lively speaker. The children ask questions that explain old words and customs, and the verses between the tales make a pleasant pause.
