金星の海賊 in short
Pirates of Venus follows one man across a planet nobody had seen. Carson Napier sets out for Mars, misses because the Moon was left out of the sums, and lands in a tree city on Venus. There he learns a language, makes friends, and falls in love with a girl he is forbidden to see.
What 金星の海賊 is about
Would you answer a letter that tells you to watch for a woman in a white shroud at midnight on the thirteenth? A writer in California nearly bins that very letter. Then a ghostly woman walks through his closed bedroom door, speaks a short message, and leaves through the solid wall.
Pirates of Venus is by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the creator of Tarzan, and it opens his Venus series. The sender of the letter is Carson Napier, a rich young man with a giant rocket and a plan to reach Mars. Venus lay hidden under clouds, so Burroughs fills it with sword fights, giant spiders, winged men, mutiny at sea, and a girl who may not be spoken to. You also get his sharp ideas about class hatred, freedom, and the price of rules.
対象読者. You will enjoy this if you love fast adventure, ships and swords, strange worlds with their own customs, and a hero who talks his way out of trouble.

A ghost and a test open the tale
The story begins with a crank letter that nearly lands in the wastebasket. Its writer, Carson Napier, asks the recipient to watch for a woman in a white shroud at midnight on the thirteenth. If she comes and speaks, he is to remember her words and answer. The busy recipient forgets the letter within five minutes.
On the night of the thirteenth a woman enters through a closed door. She says someone left Guadalupe today and will wait in Guaymas for a letter. Then she leaves through the solid wall. In the morning the letter is found in the files, postmarked Guaymas.
Napier arrives soon after and explains the trick. Born in India to a British officer and an American mother, he was raised by an old Hindu mystic named Chand Kabi, who taught him telepathy, including the power to place images in another mind. The ghost was one of those images. Napier has inherited a fortune and has been building a giant rocket on Guadalupe Island.
Then Napier fades from his chair. The secretary, Ralph Rothmund, walks in and says Mr. Napier is back again, puzzled because he shook the man's hand earlier. That visit was the final test, another image. The writer agrees to publish the messages Napier will send from another world.
A doubting narrator who checks the facts and is convinced by them makes the listener believe too.
