失楽園 in short
Paradise Lost tells how the first man and woman lose their garden. It begins in Hell with Satan and the rebel angels, crosses Chaos, and climbs to Heaven where God explains freedom and the Son offers himself for Man. It descends to Eden, where Satan studies Adam and Eve and Raphael tells of the war in Heaven.
What 失楽園 is about
What happens when the strongest rebel in the universe loses everything and still refuses to bow? Paradise Lost opens with Satan lying chained on a lake of fire, stunned, with his defeated army scattered around him. He lifts his head, studies the ruin, and decides that defeat is only a reason to fight in a new way.
John Milton wrote this epic poem in twelve books of blank verse. He was blind when he composed it, and he spoke the lines aloud to helpers who wrote them down. His aim is huge. He wants to explain why the first man and woman lost their garden, and to justify God's ways to humankind. You travel through Hell, Chaos, Heaven and Eden, and you meet a Satan whose voice readers have argued about for centuries.
対象読者. This is for readers who love grand stories of rebellion and temptation, big arguments about freedom, vivid Heaven and Hell, and language that sounds like music aloud.

Satan wakes in the burning lake
The poem names its subject at once: the first act of disobedience, the forbidden fruit, and the loss of Eden. Then it drops into Hell. Satan and his followers have fallen from Heaven after a failed revolt, and they lie stunned on a lake of fire for nine days.
Satan is the first to stir. He speaks to his ally Beelzebub with a proud, fierce voice. He admits the battle is lost, but he refuses to repent. He holds to an unconquerable will and a hatred that cannot die. Beelzebub fears they are kept alive only to suffer, but Satan vows to turn whatever good God plans into evil.
He rises from the flames, flies to dry land, and claims that a mind can make its own place. Better to be master in Hell than servant in Heaven. Milton wants us to feel the pull of this speech, because it is brave, clear, and wrong.
Satan's first speech shows how pride can turn a ruin into a throne.

How it ends (spoiler)
Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit, and the world changes. They feel shame, quarrel, and then repent. The Son judges them with mercy, and the archangel Michael shows Adam visions of the future, including a promise of a Savior born of Eve's line. Then angels lead the couple out of Eden. They leave hand in hand, sad but not hopeless, to find a place in the wide world with Providence as their guide.

『失楽園』についての質問
What is Paradise Lost about?
It retells the Bible story of Adam and Eve's disobedience. It follows Satan's fall from Heaven, his plot to corrupt the first humans in Eden, the war in Heaven, and the making of the world, with a focus on free will.
Why is Satan so central in Paradise Lost?
Milton gives Satan long, forceful speeches and real inner pain, so he feels like a full character. His pride, charm, and rebellion drive the plot, and readers have long debated whether he seems heroic or tragic.
Is Paradise Lost easy to read aloud?
Yes, it suits reading aloud. Milton wrote in rhythmic blank verse, and the lines flow in long, musical sentences. Many readers find that hearing the poem makes the story and the images come alive.
When was Paradise Lost written and is it a true story?
Milton composed it in the seventeenth century, after he lost his sight, and dictated it to helpers. It is a work of imagination built on the Bible story from Genesis, not a historical account.
What is the main message of Paradise Lost?
The poem argues that humans and angels are made free and must choose their loyalty. Obedience means something only if it is chosen, and the story also stresses mercy, hope, and the promise of rescue.
