Out of Time's Abyss in short
Out of Time's Abyss is the story of one resourceful man cut off in a prehistoric world. It begins with a march along the cliffs of Caprona, where a pale winged visitor stalks a small band of soldiers. It moves on to Bradley's capture, the city of skulls, the cruel Wieroos and the idea of evolution inside every creature of the island.
What Out of Time's Abyss is about
What would you do if a pale, white-robed figure with wings seized you from your sleeping camp and carried you off into the night sky? That is the fate of Lieutenant John Bradley in Out of Time's Abyss. The tale is set on Caprona, a hidden island in the South Pacific, sealed inside a ring of towering cliffs, where beasts long extinct still live.
Edgar Rice Burroughs, the American creator of Tarzan, wrote this book as the closing part of a trilogy about Caprona. You get a fast, eerie adventure, a grim city built from skulls, and a strange idea of how a single egg might climb the whole ladder of life.
対象読者. You will love this book if you enjoy lost-world adventure, dinosaurs, daring escapes, dark cities, dry-humored heroes, and speculative ideas about evolution told at a gallop.

Five men march north through a land of monsters
The story begins in September 1916. Lieutenant John Bradley leaves Fort Dinosaur with four companions, Sinclair, Brady, James and Tippet. They must follow the base of the barrier cliffs and find a spot where the wall can be climbed.
The jungle is beautiful and deadly. Tall grass, bright flowers and giant tree ferns hide fierce creatures at every step. The men treat danger like weather, and they joke about Chicago traffic as they walk. Bradley has one fixed habit, a fear of wasting ammunition, and he repeats it in every crisis like a drumbeat.
The first great scene shows the group at its best. A cave bear charges Tippet, who trips on roots and loses his rifle. Bradley shoots and then runs, drawing the bear away so Tippet can get up. Tippet, whom they all thought overcautious, runs back toward the beast, firing as he goes, and finishes it just as it reaches Bradley. Bradley thanks him and adds that it was a waste of ammunition.
Courage turns up in people who do not look like heroes.

『Out of Time's Abyss』についての質問
What is Out of Time's Abyss about?
It follows Lieutenant Bradley on the lost island of Caprona. A winged creature stalks his men, then carries him to the Wieroo city of Oo-oh, where he meets a captive girl and a starving prisoner and seeks a way out.
Do I need to read the other Caprona books first?
No. The story recaps what you need, including Fort Dinosaur, the captured U-33 and the island's strange peoples. It is the third in the trilogy, but its action and mystery are clear on their own.
Who are the Wieroos?
They are winged, pale, hairless beings who live on the island of Oo-oh in a city built of skulls. They wear white robes marked by color according to how many murders they have done, and they answer to Him Who Speaks for Luata.
What does cos-ata-lu mean?
It means no-egg-man, a person born directly rather than hatched from an egg in Caspak's warm pools. Everyone in Caspak hopes to reach this final stage of development, and the Wieroos prize the secret of it.
Is Out of Time's Abyss easy to read?
Yes, in its approachable style. It has clear action, vivid monsters and a lively sense of humor, carrying the plot from the first march through escape and reunion to Southern California.
