スタンドファスト氏 in short

Mr. Standfast is the story of a soldier who is asked to give up his uniform and fight the war in disguise. Hannay goes from a Cotswold garden to a village of cranks, from Clydeside workshops to a hidden cave in Skye.

What スタンドファスト氏 is about

What would you do if your country asked you to leave the front, put on a pacifist's mask, and say nothing of why? That is the order given to Brigadier-General Richard Hannay in the summer of 1917, and he hates every word of it.

Mr. Standfast is the third of John Buchan's Hannay adventures, published in 1919. Hannay moves through garden suburbs, Clyde workshops and the Highlands, chasing a mind of rare skill that feeds secrets to Germany. He also finds a friend in Mary Lamington, and the book is as much about courage as about spies.

A brigadier is ordered into a disguise

Richard Hannay is a brigadier in June 1917 when he is pulled out of the line and sent to London. Sir Walter Bullivant and Macgillivray ask him to trust them without explanation. He must drop his uniform, take the name Cornelius Brand, and pose as a South African engineer who wants peace. Hannay is furious, and he nearly refuses.

Then he visits his friend Blaikie in a shell shock hospital. Blaikie flinches when a bird flies out of a bush, and Hannay is ashamed of his own complaints. A letter from Peter Pienaar, lame in a German prison camp, steadies him further. Peter writes without a word of grief.

On the hills above Fosse Manor, at twilight, England takes hold of Hannay. He sees what all the fighting is for. At the Manor he meets a young nurse named Mary Lamington, who is singing Cherry Ripe in the garden. She tells him to live among half baked people and keep his eyes open.

A man ordered to hide his courage has found what he is protecting.

The French army arrives just in time. Wake dies after swimming a river under fire to carry Hannay's message. Ivery, left in the front trench, runs toward the German lines and is killed. When a German scout plane threatens to carry home the secret of the weak British line, Peter Pienaar takes the little Gladas up and rams the German ace Lensch. Both planes crash into the river. The line holds, and Hannay survives, with Mary safe in Amiens.

It follows General Richard Hannay in 1917 and 1918. He leaves the front to pose as a pacifist, hunts a hidden spy network in Britain, and then carries the chase to France, Switzerland and the great battle of March 1918.

Why is it called Mr. Standfast?

Mr. Standfast is a pilgrim in Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress who stays firm at the river's edge. Peter Pienaar tries to copy him, and the title points to the book's theme of steady courage in the face of loss.

Is Mr. Standfast a true story?

No, it is fiction, written by John Buchan during the First World War and published in 1919. It draws on real events such as the Somme, Arras and the German offensive of March 1918, and on real life in wartime Britain.

What is the main message of Mr. Standfast?

The book says that real courage is steady endurance, not just daring. Through Hannay, Mary, Wake and Peter, it shows people finding nerve and humility while serving a cause bigger than themselves.
