現代散文と詩 in short
Modern Prose and Poetry gathers modern literature alongside older works, including a passage from Homer. Each piece is a small world: a French inn on the Bronx, an army tent, a bishop's dining room, a pirate beach, a tenement alley, a Japanese temple courtyard. The poems range from a grasshopper's song to a protest for workers.
What 現代散文と詩 is about
Picture a painter on a muddy bank in the Bronx, shouting for a boat while a cross French cook scolds him from behind the leaves. A few pages on, a hunted convict knocks at a bishop's door, and a pirate captain leans on his sword beside a fresh grave. What kind of book holds all of that?
Modern Prose and Poetry is a school anthology put together by Margaret Ashmun in 1914. She gathered stories, essays, travel sketches, a short play and many poems, mostly by writers of her own day. Her belief was simple: knowledge and skill grow out of enjoyment. You get the main idea of each group of selections, from a quiet French inn to a burning forest.
対象読者. This book is for readers who like to sample many voices in one place: stories, sketches, essays and poems. It suits teachers and parents looking for good material to read aloud.
The 10 key ideas
Key idea 1 · free to read
Enjoyment comes first when you teach reading
Margaret Ashmun opens her preface with a plain claim. Teachers now agree, she says, that a student's enjoyment of what he reads should be the chief concern of the classroom. Knowledge and ability grow out of that enjoyment.
From this she draws a second belief. Modern writers deal with subjects closer to a young person's own interests than the old approved authors do. She keeps the readable older books, but she wants recent work to get its fair share. Young people meet modern writing every day, so they need standards for choosing what they read.
Around each piece sit study questions, theme topics, notes on names and places, and reading lists. The questions ask why an author opens as he does, and whether the reader liked the piece. Pleasure in reading is the soil in which skill grows.
